Is Camilla always going to be that woman?

I love the sound of Camilla for our third DD. Is it always going to be associated with that hat wearing wife of Charles or can we reclaim the name?

I'm hoping The famous one is old enough that by the time our DD is a grown woman, it will be less of an association. I'm indifferent to the royal family...

Thanks!

Hmm, tricky one! For me, I'm afraid I have to say that I do always think of 'That Woman' whenever I hear the name Camilla. It's probably because the name is fairly uncommon (usually a good thing as far as I'm concerned!), so it's currently quite firmly attached to one person in the public eye. I remember reading The Secret History a few years back and not being able to get over the fact that it featured twin siblings called Charles and Camilla!

minipie · 03/04/2012 17:02

Well I know two Camillas my age so wouldn't immediately think of "Charles and..."

She'll end up being called Cam or Millie anyway

DoubleGlazing · 03/04/2012 17:05

It's a very pretty name and worth reclaiming :)

Anonymumous · 03/04/2012 17:45

But by the time your DD is a grown woman, THAT woman could be Queen Camilla for all you know! Shock

There's always Camellia, I suppose...

oikopolis · 03/04/2012 18:01

Camille is preferable.

Camilla is That Woman to me. Even though intellectually, i'm sure she's a very nice lady etc.

daenerysstormborn · 03/04/2012 18:04

love camille as an alternative

PullUpAPew · 03/04/2012 18:59

I knew an amazing woman called Carmel and think that's a lovely name along similar lines.

Sadly I think Camilla is Mrs Charles, yes.

Winnie78 · 03/04/2012 20:10

I really like Camilla. Have you considered Cordelia? Similar-ish...

bronze · 03/04/2012 20:13

To me Camilla is one of my old neighbours. Yes I know Charlie married a Camilla but he also married a Diana and I know plenty of people with that name and have never made the association when their names are mentioned

Firawla · 03/04/2012 20:14

I think its really nice. if you used it people may think charles and camilla at first but soon they would get over that and just associate it with your dd

milli2512 · 03/04/2012 20:35

I'm a Camilla and on the whole mostly have a good reaction to my name. People do make Charles and camilla jokes but since they married It's not been as much. Mostly people presume I'm going to be posh. I also get a lot of people tell me It's a pretty name. I have to say I like being a Camilla.

tootiredtothink · 03/04/2012 20:37

Yes. Smile

ajandjjmum · 03/04/2012 20:43

Afraid so Grin

HMSwater · 03/04/2012 20:48

Ha, Queen Camilla! It honestly hadn't occurred to me but it could turn out appropriate given how much this baby wants to be noticed (6weeks to go).

I'm still considering Camille. I really like the possible nicknames, ESP Milly. Our other girls are Bianca and Eloise.

Thanks for your feedback!

she got on SCD, she got to meet the cast of The Killing and got a free jumper we would all kill for and present University Challenge's winners trophy...

I like her a lot if I am honest

Piffle · 03/04/2012 20:50

and the name is classic I think

Surf25 · 03/04/2012 21:00

For me, to answer OP's question, no. Sure there's that Camilla, but I like the name, it's known but not popular which is nice, and I don't see it as an issue, especially for a baby growing up in the next generation. All names have 'associations' of one kind or another so depends how much it bothers you really.

Love Camille actually, know of a wee 2 yo with this name. Gorgeous, probably slightly prefer it to Camilla.

southeastastra · 03/04/2012 21:01

yes Grin

southeastastra · 03/04/2012 21:01

was it not a soap once?

CroissantNeuf · 03/04/2012 21:05

To me Camilla is a braying, horse-faced, pearl wearing sloane that I was at college with.

I can't hear the name without hearing her hideous voice.

Next thought is "that woman".
