How would you spell the name pronounced A-lay-na?

Alana.

Surf25 · 31/03/2012 09:54

Elena

because a friend has this name, and that's how it's pronounced. Before I knew her I would have said her name was pronounced Eh-len-ah, a bit like Eleanor without the 'or' ending iyswim

Lovely name, is this the name you were thinking of OP?

HettyKett · 31/03/2012 10:04

Elena or Helena (a lot of people drop the H in speak).

HettyKett · 31/03/2012 10:04

speak Hmm speech

winkle2 · 31/03/2012 10:07

I love it but I don't like the spelling Alan with an a on the end and I was hoping it wasn't Elena cause I would pronounce that el-en-a. Ive got a thing about names being spelt the way they sound after years of my name being mispronounced.

I'd spell it Alanah but that's because I knew a girl at school who spelt it this way and pronounced it a-lay-nah.

I think some people pronounce it a-larr-nah if it's spelt as above though.

It's a love name though however you choose to spell it :)

VegimalStyle · 31/03/2012 10:12

Stick with Alayna. It means 'in love' in Hawaiian!

FondleWithCare · 31/03/2012 10:21

My friend Elena pronounces it as uh-lay-na rather than a-lay-na. Spelling it Alayna could work well though.

Eglu · 31/03/2012 10:24

I think putting a y in would definitely help.

winkle2 · 31/03/2012 10:39

Yes that's what I mean uh-lay-na! I love A names.

I have a friend with this pronunciation and she spells it Alaina. She's never had any problems with others mispronouncing it either. Lovely name.

Kayzr · 31/03/2012 10:44

Alana. There is one in DS1s class.

Laambkins · 31/03/2012 10:45

Alana. I love this name

SoupDragon · 31/03/2012 10:46

Elena.

Alana would be Alarna to me.

droves · 31/03/2012 10:54

Elena Is pronounced E-le-na

Alana is pronounced Alan-a

Alannah is pronounced al-Ann-ah

Alayna is pronounced a-lay- na

All very pretty names IMO

GreenDragonfly · 31/03/2012 10:55

Elena.

Agree with SoupDragon, Alana is pronounced Alarna.

droves · 31/03/2012 11:01

Greenfly ,No it's not ....it does not have an r in it . Confused.

Alarna would be pronounced Alarna .

SoupDragon · 31/03/2012 11:07

It doesn't need an R in it Hmm

SoupDragon · 31/03/2012 11:08

Alanis Morrisette? No R there.
Lady Gaga? No r there.

droves · 31/03/2012 11:32

So if it doesn't need an r ,why pronounce it wrongly with an r then ?

SoupDragon · 31/03/2012 11:36

I'm not pronouncing it wrongly.

droves · 31/03/2012 12:21

Suppose it depends if you have an accent or not .

Anonymumous · 31/03/2012 12:28

I say tomayto, you say tomarto...

Personally I've never heard of 'Alarna' as a spelling for this name. And Alana is pronounced 'Al-ar-na' round here.

nickelhasababy · 31/03/2012 12:30

I would say Elena , too.

nickelhasababy · 31/03/2012 12:31

( droves it's more alahna for alana, with a long a - like the southern grass)
