If we already have a Harry would we be able to use Lawrence?

We were considering using Lawrence for DC4 until we realised people could shorten it to Larry and we would then have a Harry and a Larry. Because of this is the name Lawrence unuseable with Harry?

Isn't there a series of children's books with characters called Harry, Larry and Barry? I wouldn't.

kimberlina · 27/03/2012 22:10

I would shorten it to Laurie so dont see the problem personally

I don't thik that Larry is used as a nn for Lawrence that much any more. If you used Laurence then Laurie is the more obvious (and nicer!) nn in any case.

But Laurence is the female version of Laurent. Lawrence is a better option for a boy imo. But I would still shorten to Laurie. Would you have to shorten at all though?

Not in the UK. The origin is from the Latin, and it predates Lawrence by some centuries. In France Laurence is female, but then Dominique is male. It's just different.

I have a relative called Laurence, he is never called Larry and never has been (he's 44 now!). I prefer the 'u' spelling and the Laurie nm if you were going to shorten it.

Harry and Larry Grin

Agree with others - go with Laurence/Lawrence and shorten to Laurie!

What's wrong with Harry and Larry?

Anyway, we are talking about two individuals here. They will not spend their whole lives joined together. In the blink of an eye they will be grown up and most likely living in different places and doing different things.

Plus it'll be his name and if he prefers Larry to Lawrie he can do as he wishes.
