I like Aryana for a girl, I think it is very pretty. It is also Persian and DP is Persian.

It is pronounced the same as Arianna but do you think the spelling will confuse people?

I assumed it was pronounced - a/ri/ah/na
Is this right?

yes that's how it's pronounced.
The same as Ariana I meant, Arianna would be a-ri-anna.

Not to be the bringer of bad news but you do realise it contains the word Aryan? Not great connotations in my opinion.

I agree with Sellan - would spell it Arianna rather than Aryanna

The Aryan race? That Hitler was trying to 'protect' via the Holocaust and mass genocide of the Jews during WW2.

This would be enough to put me off that particular spelling, too. :(

It's a shame because it's a pretty name linked to your DP's culture, but I think that most people would get the Nazi connotations right away. I would steer clear for that reason :(

It sounds like the name Hitler would have chosen for his daughter...

Yes I had thought of the Nazi connotations and I don't want it to be the first thing people think of when they see the name written. But it means a lot to us so we definitely want to use it if we have a girl.

Perhaps Ariana would be better?

I like Arianna. DP's family would probably still pronounce it Ah-ri-ah-na but that's not really a problem and the name would still be special to them.

Ariana and Arianna are both beautiful, and I don't think anyone would make an Aryan connection then. It's the "y" in the other spelling that draws attention to the ugly word within the gorgeous name.

I'm glad you like the other spellings, because it would be a shame not to use a name that's so lovely and has meaning for you too. :)

There is a child in my DSs class called aryan! I was shocked when I saw the class list for the first time

I didn't think of Aryan, but I am spanish and we spell it differently. But I see the problems it might bring. I LOVE Ariana, we have it in Spain too, its a version of Ariadna and In Basque Country (my region) Ariane. I love it.

Ariadna comes from Greek mithology.

Oh, and I think you could go for Ariana, as above said, its a lovely name that means a lot to you and you just change the spelling a bit to stay clear of nasty confusions.

It is a nice name - I would have pronounced it the same way you do. However, Aryan does have very unfortunate associations so I would change the y to an i.

i immediately read neo-Nazi from Aryana, sorry. I know that's horrid and that it's actually a lovely Persian name, and the word Aryan was sort of commandeered by the Nazis, but the association remains.

Ariane or Ariana is far preferable to me.

Aryan race was my first thought too. Arianna is a very pretty name - go with that spelling or Ariana and then you avoid any Nazi connections.
