We've decided to call DS one of the above. We thought we'd picked the most common spelling to minimise the number of 'and it's spelt' conversations he will have to have over the years. Trouble is most people are spelling it differently from us. so off the top of your head how would you spell it? Thanks!

I think you will always be asked how you spell it. I know an Alasdair and an Alastair.

AllotmentLottie · 15/03/2012 19:33

This is what put us off this name. Sorry.

CecilyP · 15/03/2012 19:40

I think the most common spelling is Alistair.

topknob · 15/03/2012 19:41

Ny nephew is Alasdair x

Spookey80 · 15/03/2012 19:42

Alastair

TheyCallMeMimi · 15/03/2012 20:22

Alastair. But I work with an Alasdair who insists his is the 'correct' spelling. He also told me he would never give a child that name becasue of the speeling issue (didn't put me off though).

violetwellies · 15/03/2012 20:26

My Db is Alisdair, he doesn't mind that ony family spell it correctly :)

Alastair I think... great name by the way.

I always have to spell my name and frankly never bothered me once people know your name it's fine.

violetwellies · 15/03/2012 20:27

Only

HeidiHole · 15/03/2012 20:28

Alastair

AKissIsNotAContract · 15/03/2012 20:29

Alastair. It's a lovely name.

SpottyTeacakes · 15/03/2012 20:31

Alistair, usually shortened to Ali

submarine · 15/03/2012 21:53

Alasdair is the scottish gaelic spelling for Alexander.

it is pronounced with the d , just as it is spelt, it is a differnt name from alister, Alastair etc because the sound with those is the T.

PricklyThistle · 15/03/2012 21:57

Am with Submarine re the proper spelling. Alasdair.

TheSurgeonsMate · 15/03/2012 21:59

I think submarine is a bit strict. In lowland scotland many people are called Alasdair pronounced like the name you are thinking of.

vogonmothership · 15/03/2012 22:00

Alasdair (biased Wink)

DairyNips · 15/03/2012 22:01

My dh is Alistair

NormanTheForeman · 15/03/2012 22:12

My Sottish FIL is Alexander but known as Alistair (with that spelling). I have met three other people with the name, all have been Alistairs.

Fuchzia · 15/03/2012 23:55

Thanks all! Most people who have sent cards etc think Alistair despite us clearly spelling it another way. I like Alastair and on the basis that he will always have to spell it I'm thinking we go with what we like. I love Alasdair also but decided it feels too Scottish a spelling for someone from Surrey Grin
