ELias, Eddie, Freddie or Charlie?

Please help us decide on our second baby boy's name. Our DS1 is called Arlo so we need a name that compliments his name and have come up with the above short list. The birth certificate would full version where appropriate (ie. Edward, Frederick or Charles).
Your thoughts would be really appreciated. Or any alternatives that might work.

I prefer Charlie but it is very popular if that bothers you. Though Charles/Charlie has a similar sound to Arlo due to the 'arl' bit.
Eddie and Freddie are both nice.
Elias probably fits more with your DS1's name style if you're after a 'set' though personally I'm not a huge fan of Elias - just don't think it rolls off the tongue easily if you're calling it across the school yard.
Just out of interest is Arlo only Arlo or is there a longer version that it's short for?

shoobidoo · 13/03/2012 12:57

Arlo is lovely and imo much nicer than your suggestions for DS2 but if I had to choose then definately Elias. The others (Charlie, Freddie, Eddie) don't really fit with Arlo imo.

How about Quinn/Quentin, Rufus or Felix?

TheCunningStunt · 13/03/2012 13:09

I know an Elias and he is lovely...so def a winner there

ButterPecanMuffin · 13/03/2012 13:26

Elias - great name and fits well with Arlo.

MrsJohnDeere · 13/03/2012 13:36

Freddie. Lovely name.

Don't think Charlie works with Arlo - sound a bit too similar IMHO.

bigyellow · 13/03/2012 13:47

Hmm this is tough.
Just found out that Arlo is the Italian version of Charlie so have scrubbed that off the list.
I know several felixs so we can't have that sadly.
Any other suggestions??

Agree Elias is the best fit. It would be a nice 'set'.

How about:
Sebastian
Tobias/Toby
Silas
Raphael

PercyFilth · 13/03/2012 14:17

I've just realised that I've never heard Elias spoken out loud. How is it pronounced? Is it Ellie-as or E-lye-as?

I thought Carlo was the Italian equivalent for Charlie.

How about Levi?

FilterCoffee · 13/03/2012 15:34

All nice names. I think Freddie goes best with Arlo.

ripsishere · 13/03/2012 15:45

Elias. We've a friend called that. he is a lovely man with a lovely name.
Carlo is the Italian version of Charlie.

rachel1970 · 13/03/2012 16:56

Agree that Elias goes best with Arlo.

Also like Quentin/Quinn, Tobias/Toby and Raphael and think they'd go very well with Arlo too.

pinkgirlythoughts · 13/03/2012 17:47

My son is Freddie (Frederick), and I'm pushing for Arlo if the next one is a boy!

oikopolis · 13/03/2012 18:33

Elias is best fit with Arlo by far. The other three just sound like the run-of-the-mill, super-popular boys' nicknames that are being used by everyone and their dog atm.

justlemonade · 13/03/2012 18:36

Have you thought of Ellis too? 'Arlo and Ellis' has a nice ring to it!

blondiep14 · 13/03/2012 19:31

My DS's are Charlie and Freddie!
We know an Arlo with a brother called Quinn.

StealthNinja · 13/03/2012 22:39

I like Elias best, I also like Elijah along the same lines.

Stellan · 14/03/2012 12:21

Definitely Arlo & Elias - the others are too common to be paired with a name like Arlo. I do really like the suggestion of Arlo & Ellis too.

With a name like Arlo - which isn't very common - I think you have to pick something a bit special to go with it: for example, Arlo & Dashiell, Arlo & Elias, Arlo & Emmett, Arlo & Ezra, Arlo & Flynn, Arlo & Jasper, Arlo & Phineas, Arlo & Silas NOT Arlo & Ben, Arlo & Harry, Arlo & Sam, Arlo & Tom. (Ben, Harry, Sam, and Tom are all great names but I personally think it's odd to name one child a rather unusual name and another a very commonplace one.)

mopsyflopsy · 14/03/2012 12:32

Another vote for Arlo and Elias. I also like Ellis, Quinn (we have a Quentin Smile) and Ezra. The others (Charlie, Freddie, Eddie) are a little dull in comparison and quite widely used already. Arlo is lovely by the way!

PercyFilth · 14/03/2012 14:36

So how do you say Elias? I still have never heard it spoken and neither has anyone I've asked.

FilterCoffee · 14/03/2012 14:43

Elias is pronounced Ell-EYE-us. It's a Biblical name and that's how I've always heard it said in church.

Stellan · 14/03/2012 14:43

eh-LEE-us?

welovesausagedogs · 14/03/2012 14:43

Elias and Arlo - love that combination.

Stellan · 14/03/2012 14:45

eh-LEE-us is how it's pronounced in Germany and Sweden, apparently. eh-LYE-us is probably going to be the more instinctive pronunciation in England because of the name Elijah.

PercyFilth · 14/03/2012 15:05

Hmmm. I was thinking EL-ee-us as in Eliot! Don't like e-LYE-us because it sounds like liar.

mopsyflopsy · 14/03/2012 15:32

I'd probably say El-ee-as as that is how it is pronounced in German and would be the phonetic pronunciation.

But I'd quikly learn to pronounce it El-eye-as if that was preferred.
