traditionnal names for boys

i like traditionnal names for boys, preferably ones that have a few options when shortening (so that they can grow and not be too cutesy later on).
like Thomas (tommy, tom) or James (jimmy, jim)
only my DP rejects most of these as they sound "too English/posh/have been used in eastenders" and would like something a bit "irish" (he's irish). I'm not keen on irish names and my family that is french would not be able to pronounce them.

does anyone have any ideas?

Is Finn or Findlay Irish or have I strayed into Scottish?

Owen (Eoin) is Irish and French people would be able to pronounce it Ok.

thank you for all your suggestions. i love jack and alfie, but will have to talk him into it as they are both in eastenders. is it just me or finding a traditionnal name that isn't in any tv programme going to be hard going. i also like edward but that was rejected as too posh/too english. please keep the suggestions coming they have been a great help.

I'm sure they could pronounce the likes of Aidan, Brendan and Patrick!
