Dorothy or Arthur?

Really early days here (7 weeks!!) but just indulging in a bit of baby-naming.

I have an Elizabeth (Betty). I love the name so much. Most people seem to get it, but some are a bit Hmm, not that that matters. I'm trying to think of suitable sibling names - I like old-fashioned, but nothing too popular.

So how about Dorothy (Dolly / Dora)? It's my gran's name, and Betty is DH's nan's name, so would be fitting.

Or Nancy?

I do love Arthur (Art) for a boy, but I can see the unfortunate rhyming opportunities with it (and Betty, but no-one had better dare!!)

Any more ... uh, Seth? My friend also loves this, and is due before me, but I also wonder if it's becoming too popular.

Love Fred and Frank but can't have those for obvious reasons.

Any comments or suggestions along these lines?

Dorothy is hideous. Sorry.

I think we may have similar taste in names and seem to like names with a 'th' sound in for some reason. I have a Joseph, an Arthur (Bear) and an Elizabeth (Betty). I'm afraid Dorothy can only remind me of my great Aunt who was ...ahem...far from glamourous. Seth was in our shortlist but discounted as it just had the wrong feel to it. Nancy is lovely. Other names in our shortlist were:-

Leo
Louis
James (Jimmy)
Henry

Martha
Rose
Emmeline
Alice
Genevieve

Ooooh you have nice taste in names OP, and also lou4791. We have an 18 month old Arthur and I still absolutely love the name. We've never met another one in RL and we've had nothing be positive response to it. I am 14 weeks pregnant
with DC2 and thinking Wilfred or Herbie for a boy and Elspeth (Elsie) or Alice for a girl. Elizabeth is lovely, especially shortened to Betty but we have a close friend with the same name so its out. Same with Dorothy unfortunately, love the name but our good friends dog got there first...Good luck with the little bump! Smile

TheRhubarb, I remember seeing your effusive posts about all things Sherlock after the last episode, so I'm not surprised by your ace choices :)

Funny to have such similar taste to lou4791, and thetigerwhocametotea, I just happened to by mulling over Wilfred on my way home from work!

Love Dorothy- but can't stop myself mentally putting "Friend of..." in front of it!

Dolly is such a bad idea as a name for a girl- really bad messages, IMHO!

And I think you have to be careful with Seth depending on where you live- he would always be Seff round here. Ds honestly thought hisnbest friend's name was spelled Efan whence was little!

That consideration also applies to my favourite girl suggestion at the moment -Edith.
