DS1 has to write about the origins of names for his homework (he's in Y2),what his name means and why it was chosen?

He's got a fairly ordinary name (William) but have looked at about 10 different websites and they are all giving different meanings so wondered if any of you knew a definitive answer that I'd be able to interpret for a 6 year old. It's a German name from what I understand meaning protector but some sites are saying it means "Will Helmut" which is confusing the issue somewhat! They've got to discuss it in great detail in school and there is another William in his class and have got an awful feeling they're going to go in with different ideas which is going to be a little confusing!

I would stick to the protector meaning, hes only y2, and Im sure the why he was given the name is of more interest to the class and teacher.

Yep you're probably right...why he was given the name is a whole other issue to do with his middle name which should have been his first name but we couldn't use it together with our surname lol!

Why on earth they couldn't have spellings or maths to do is beyond me lol!

Maybe your son's teacher is pg and is looking for inspiration!

Just make something up if it's easier.

Mimi...thats a good point hadn't thought of that lol!

It's to do with RE apparently but maybe she's got another motive!

this website is the most reliable in terms of giving the actual, researched, scholarly sort of origin of a name:

www.behindthename.com/name/william

Oh thats fantastic-exactly what I was looking for and hadn't come across that website on my searching!

I found this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_%28name%29

To be honest if he is year two he is going to be quite limited how much he can say/write about it. And if there are 30 kids in the class they won't get much time each.

I'm sure it will be fun and he will enjoy it.
