Am really starting to like the name Elin - spelt this way as opposed to Ellen (which is nice but not as nice). What are your thoughts? Is it pronounced El-in with the emphahis on the El? And do you think people would tend to mispronounce it? Do you know any Elins?

All views welcome!

Know one- aged 19. Pron el- in, el/ Ellie to her mates.

Will take a while to convince people it's it a spelling error. But go for it if you love it.

rachel234 · 23/02/2012 07:08

I know a Swedish one who pronounces it E-lin with the emphasis on E (like End). Lovely name.

MarjorieAntrobus · 23/02/2012 07:17

People will assume it is one of these three options;

Elin to rhyme with Helen

Or

Eeee Lin

Or

El in

You will have to instruct them. Then they'll get it.

SoupDragon · 23/02/2012 07:19

I"d pronounce it the same as rachel234

EdithWeston · 23/02/2012 07:19

I think you would get all sorts of variant pronunciations. I would say Elle-in with even stress on both syllables, but I can see several other possibilities.

Would it bother you to have to keep explaining how you want it said?

I went to school with an Elin pronounced EEE-lin. She was Welsh so I assume that's the standard Welsh pronunciation of the name. How does Tiger Woods' ex pronounce her name?

LingDiLong · 23/02/2012 11:57

I have an Elin! And I'm Welsh. Never heard it pronounced Eee-lin before. I say Eh-lin with no emphasis on either part really. Pronounciation has never been a problem, even with English relatives as it's pretty short and straight forward!!

My neices and nephews in a different part of Wales pronounce it slightly differently, kind of like Air-lin but it's a subtle difference and it doesn't bother me.

Hedwig3 · 23/02/2012 12:00

I know a 6 year old Elin from school and always thought her name was Erin until I saw in written down recently!

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 23/02/2012 13:14

E-lin like Helen.

Nice name!

ProlificYoungGentlemenBreeder · 23/02/2012 13:17

I like it!

Elin is my middle name and I agree with LingdiLong on pronunciation. It does not sound like Helen and is definitely a legitimate Welsh name.

BelleEnd · 23/02/2012 14:15

Also with LingDiLong. I'm Welsh. Lovely name. I think Tiger Woods' ex-wife pronounces her name Ee-lin (Norwegian, I think)

TwllBach · 23/02/2012 14:19

I love the name and knew it was Welsh as we live in Wales. The only problem I would have with it is if we ever moved back to England, people might think it was a spelling mistake and I hate spelling mistakes... But then it is such a pretty name that I would/will use it anyway
