DD2 is due in 3 weeks and we haven't got a name yet. DD1 is called Joely, which has turned out to be a name we never see or hear anywhere and which people get wrong all the time (Joey, Jolie, Jodie, Josie, Jolene etc).

I still love her name and she totally is a Joely, and once people see it written down they 'get' it, but I do wish it wasn't quite so tricky for people to say/hear.

So, we want something for DD2 that matches in the sense that it's a little bit quirky and unusual, doesn't say too much about us as a family so people don't prejudge (i.e. not too posh/trendy etc) but isn't so out there that she spends her whole life spelling her name (as her poor big sister will)!

Here's our not very extensive shortlist, some of which I know don't really fit our own criteria!

Cecilia
Cecily
Clementine
Clara
Edie
Elspeth
Esme (pronounced Ez-mee, before the traditional Ez-mee/Es-may bunfight starts!)
Lily
Polly

Surname begins with B and is one syllable, so names beginning with B don't sound great. For a different reason, avoid names beginning with A too.

Ideas for middle names include:

Adelaide
Rosalind
Hope
Elizabeth

What names can you think of that are 'like' these and will make us go, 'yeah, that's the name!'

Cecilia is my favourite from your list - love it. Cecilia Hope sounds lovely Smile. If you want unusual avoid Lily - there are billions out there.

iwouldgoouttonight · 16/02/2012 15:07

I really like Cecilia, Clementine, Clara, Edie and Elspeth. Agree about names ending in a 'ly' sound might be too much with Joely as well.

There is a Clementine and Edie at DD's nursery but I haven't come across any children with the other names yet so they might still be not too popular. Clara is my favourite as it was my great grandma's name Smile

Stellan · 16/02/2012 15:09

You seem to like names ending in a similar sound to Joely so here are some suggestions:
Amelie
Coralie
Clemency
Dulcie
Edie
Elodie
Elsie
Felicity
Hermione
Hilary
Ione
Jessamy
Kitty
Libby
Liberty
Naomi
Noémie
Ottilie (bit posh, perhaps?)
Romilly
Rosemary
Tilly
Verity

EightiesChick · 16/02/2012 15:15

Lily, Edie and Esme are all popular IMO so I would avoid those. Clementine is rising in popularity too from what I've seen.

My favourites from your list is Clara (easy to spell and say, too) and Cecilia. They avoid the second child with an 'ie' ending problem, too. Though if you were inclined to ignore that point, I like Kitty from the list above.

Thanks! Any more? None of those is leaping out asking to be picked, IYKWIM

Some interesting ones in there Stellan, thanks!

Posy has always been a favourite name, ever since reading Ballet Shoes as a kid. Hmmm. Food for thought.

Mabel was on my list for DD1 but DH vetoed it outright.

And I do like Margot but kind of feel it's a grown up name but not a baby/child name.

Keep em coming if you can be bothered! This is really helping!

All the middle names are lovely.

manicinsomniac · 16/02/2012 17:55

Clara, Edie, Esme and Lily are top 300. Doesn't matter imo but it means they aren't unusual I guess.

I like Cecilia, Clara and Esme

Other possibilities that avoid the top 300 (sorry if there are dupicates, haven't read the other lists)
Ariel, April, Ayla, Amaya, Alina, Allegra, Alondra, Anoushka, Bryony, Belinda, Bianca, Cynthia, Cora, Carrie, Callie, Camilla, Clarissa, Dora, Dakota, Enya, Elin, Ellis, Erica, Effy, Farrah, Fenella, Gemma, Genevieve, Ginny, Harper, Harmony, Halle, Indiana, Jerica, Jessamy, Kirsty, Kirsten, Leonie, Mallory, Nikita, Nora, Penny, Riley, Saffron, Suzannah, Sterre, Sorrell, Talitha, Tessa, Tara, Viola, Verity, Xanthe, Zia.

Joely and Iona
Joely and Edie sounds nice
Joely and Clara don't quite sound like they're from the same family to my ears, but lovely individually.
Joely and Esme - lovely together. I know a great Essie.

areyoumad · 16/02/2012 20:28

Cordelia, Sophia, for a bit more out there I like Storm Grin but would never be allowed it by DH lol

Don't call your child Jolene. Makes me think of facial hair lightener.

Lily and Polly both imo go well with Joely. I also love Posy Smile

Joely and Pia (already posted) would be nice as would Peta.

Puff The OP already has a DD called Joely!

PercyFilth · 17/02/2012 15:42

I do like Margot but kind of feel it's a grown up name but not a baby/child name

I'm sure you don't need us to tell you what's wrong with that reasoning. Wink
