Is it HEER-A or HAIR-A or something else?

Haven't read the thread, but am right.

MotherPanda · 10/02/2012 15:16

I know a Heera (Hear-a) It's lovely :)

seeker · 10/02/2012 15:17

Have now read thread. Blimy- I'm Greek and didn't even realise!

alexpolismum · 10/02/2012 15:18

This is specially for GetOrf - for future reference, I have found that most Greek origin words in English* that begin with 'he' NOT 'hae' are 'ita' (H) in Greek and originally pronounced 'ee'.

Hope that helps!

*possibly also in Englush

I blame Mrs Biddle in the top class in infants for mispronouncing Hera when she was reading us Greek myths in class.

I am not entirely sure why she decided to read us 7 year olds stories about Zeus turning into a shower of gold to impregnate someone, and his wife Hera being furious about it.

OP just call the baby Juno and be done with the arguments. Grin

MortaIWombat · 10/02/2012 19:21

Grin at goml.

mathanxiety · 10/02/2012 22:16

Did the Romans pronounce their J's though?

JollySergeantJackrum · 10/02/2012 22:19

I would have said Her - ah. We were told to physically phonetically pronounce ancient languages when we were at school.

Is Heerah not a character from thundercats?

JollySergeantJackrum · 10/02/2012 22:20

Please ignore the physically in that post. Damn phone.

Anyone gone for 'hayra' yet? That's how I always hear it in my head, despite knowing that it's 'heera'.
