It is Welsh for white.

It's a male name. The female would be Gwyneth.

Male

I think of it as a nickname for Gwyneth, but that is almost certainly because I am not Welsh and have never known a male Gwyn.

Gwyn is the name of the main character in The Owl Service by Alan Garner.

LingDiLong · 06/02/2012 11:52

Male. I am most definitely Welsh, living in Wales and have never heard of a female Gwyn. Gwen or Gwyneth would be female. Wyn is a unisex name though I think - but usually used as a middle name for girls rather than a first name.

Also Cornish for white, and yes, male here too.

YuleingFanjo · 06/02/2012 12:03

Am Welsh. 'Twas on my list. Crossed it off because hormonal ol' me thought it was racist- I mean, bloody hell, how ridiculous... It's a fab name.
For a boy.

Male, -yn ending.
Female, -en ending.

Gwyn and Gwen.

RillaBlythe · 08/02/2012 15:00

I know a male one.

WottingerAndWottingerAreDead · 08/02/2012 16:28

I've known male and female Gwyn's, the female ones both short for Gwyneth, I'm pretty certain. But I think it's there with Rowan- in that it fits equally man or woman.

Gwyn is male. I had an Uncle Gwyn. Love a Welsh name Smile especially for a boy. It was on my list but didn't have enough Welsh credentials to get away with it.
