Muriel yuck. Marielle lovely

ShowOfHands · 28/01/2012 20:52

My 87yo grandmother's called Muriel. I think it's pretty.

BandOMothers · 28/01/2012 20:52

It's MAAriel!

Sorry I just think of Muriels' Wedding!

BandOMothers · 28/01/2012 20:53

I see why you like it though. It IS nice when you say it. Like Beryl. Which is a beautiful stone...and sounds nice when you listen to it properly.

Ohgoonthenpouranother · 28/01/2012 21:12

Much nicer old lady names about
Nancy
Eliza
Iris
Betty
Beatrice

GrimblesMother · 28/01/2012 21:14

Have Myrtle, go on, pleeeeese.

Such a lovely plant.

Lyftiduft · 28/01/2012 21:31

the Muriel I know is French. Sounds lovely when she says it! Meryl is nice actually, and you could call her Merry when she's little.

BuntyPenfold · 28/01/2012 21:40

Meriel is much nicer imo.

PopcornBiscuit · 28/01/2012 21:51

Marielle?

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 28/01/2012 21:53

Glad you've binned that - but you should do the same with Meryl!

MrsBovary · 29/01/2012 12:14

I never thought I'd say this, but I like it, though wouldn't use myself. Meryl I'm not so keen on.

jandymaccomesback · 29/01/2012 20:19

I've known quite a few Muriels. Not a name I'd choose.

TheSydenhamSet · 29/01/2012 20:22

Urrggh. On the other hand I know a very nice 31 yr old Muriel who i went to school with. If you love it go for it; names grow on people.

marshmallowpies · 30/01/2012 11:57

Like BandofMothers I have a secret fondness for Beryl - people are always surprised when I tell them 'you know it's a kind of precious stone?' and they realise it's no different to being called Ruby or Pearl.

Muriel, though...it IS a really pretty name, in its way, but I can't help thinking there's a reason Muriel in the film changes her name (not that Mariel is any better imo - Mariella or Marilla are much nicer).

shouldnotbehere · 30/01/2012 12:36

Meriel and Miriam are lovely. Muriel is hideous. The only youngish Muriel I have ever met, had the nickname Moo

shouldnotbehere · 30/01/2012 12:38

I don't like the name Mabel, at all.

MamaLazarou · 30/01/2012 13:46

Muriel and Mabel are both hideous.

Meriel and Miriam are lovely.

smother · 30/01/2012 22:42

I don't think Muriel is that bad! But prefer...

Marianne
Miriam
Marcia
Martha

PopcornBiscuit · 30/01/2012 22:50

I think you're ahead of your time. Muriel is bound to make a comeback. Its certainly much nicer than some of the rather harsh names which are coming into vogue, like Astrid, Beatrix, Margot, Greta and the like.

lollystix · 30/01/2012 23:22

It's Mariel!Grin

marriednotdead · 30/01/2012 23:30

I am known by my middle name. What does that tell you...

BustersOfDoom · 30/01/2012 23:44

Hideous. I'd have been changing my name by deed poll as soon as I was old enough if I'd been called Muriel.

And Beryl is hideous too. Who cares if it's a semi-precious stone? So is Spodumene, Hambergite and Obsidian.

Muriel and Beryl are ugly, ugly old fashioned names. There is nothing retro fashionable about them. Do you really want to saddle your DDs with such crap names?
