One with a gaelic name one with a celtic name - too much? [confused]

Hi All,

My first son has a celtic name (Struan) as his Dad is scottish going back into the mists of time. I'm due my second son, all being well, in May.

I'm keen for him to have some of my heritage (welsh going back into the mists of time) and call him Gethin.

Would we be saddling our children with a little bit too much family history? We could just pick a second scottish name or something a bit more mainstream!

No I think they would both go fine together. Congratulations on your son due in may.. I also have a son due in May :)

WitchOfEndor · 26/01/2012 10:26

I think they go together really well Smile

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 26/01/2012 10:27

I was at school with a Struan.

Love the name Gethin. :)

WillbeanChariot · 26/01/2012 10:27

I think they are both lovely names, with good reasons behind them. I like names that are given for a season instead of just random choices IYSWIM. Bet your sons will be proud of their heritage too.

ViviPru · 26/01/2012 10:28

LOVE Gethin, would be a contender for me too. And sounds great with your other DDs name :)

BlueChampagne · 26/01/2012 12:51

Great choices - go for it!

HardCheese · 26/01/2012 13:10

They're both lovely names, so go for it. But I think you're getting your terminology unecessarily confused - both Welsh and Scots Gaelic are classed as 'Celtic' languages, along with Irish, Manx, Cornish, Breton etc.

Scots Gaelic is classed as in the Goidelic subgroup and Welsh in the Brythonic (from what I remember from linguistics lectures!), but I doubt anyone's going to object on those grounds!

Thanks for the feedback - feeling more confident.

Names are a total minefield and very much marmite territory!!

Great names, go together really well and you have good reasons for choosing them so go for it!

Haziedoll · 26/01/2012 15:42

I think they sound good together. Our two both have Celtic names although they are more mainstream.

Fo0ffyShmo0ffer · 26/01/2012 15:47

They are fab together. You should do it.

Great names and both from the same 'tribe' if you go back far enough!
Love Struan in particular .

My son has a gaelic name (we're Scots). Our next son (due v soon) will have a Welsh name. My parents live in Wales and I went to uni there and bugger the hataz! ;)
