Gawd, I've named my baby a chav name!

So he's 17 months old now. I've had a moment of clarity and realised that Riley is a chivvy name. Poor boy. Sorry fella.

I think there is a slight element of chav there but I actualy really like the name Riley! Don't worry about it, as long as you like it who cares!

I like it!! Fwiw i know lots of very well to do families with offsprings given names considered 'chavvy' by many. Riley is fine. As long as you like it, who cares!! :)

Name trends change. If you like it other's opinions shouldn't be a problem. Can't say I know of any Rileys so maybe it's a regional connotation?

If you like it, what's the problem? He's not going to suffer for being called Riley - it's a nice name.

I have a chavvy name, I care not!

I have an 11 year old who will apparently forever be labeled a chav because of their name. I love the name and I don't give a flying figgy toffee pudding what other people, with prejudiced views, may think.

It's not really chavvy, it's quite American-sounding but I'm sure it suits your DS. Your DS will shape the name; the name won't shape him!

I think its a nice name.. but i love Ruby and apparently thats chavvy to now! I know someone who spells it Rylee, erugh!!!

I really liked Riley when pg in 2010. I would now also class it as one of those names that became very popular very quickly and will feel dated soon. BUT you don't know this when you name someone necessarily, do you? All the mums of Traceys in the 1970s probably thought they'd stumbled on something hugely original!! And fwiw I currently work with two highly successful Traceys (worse in fact -a Tracy and a Traci!) so a faddy (I'm not saying the ch*v word!) name doesn't necessarily hold someone back.

according the MN masses many names seem to fall into the "chavvy" category, including my own name and at least 2 of my DC names, possibly 2 of the others (there is some disagreement on that thread about them).

Who gets to decide anyway - a name is a personal thing, one persons name hate is anothers love and vice versa. I think people who need to label things as chavvy or posh perhaps have some issues they need to address...

If MN had its way, all children would be called Persephone and Cassius. Which would mean that those names would become common and dull. You can't win so don't even try

I know a very middle class Riley (mum is a teacher) and I like it.

Agree with Chickens - unless Henrietta or Hugo then the majority on MN won't like it. I personally have an aversion to public school type names, and the current trend to out-posh each other.

BTW - my daughters name has been around for thousands of years but apparently it's still slightly chav to a minority of MNers !?!

I don't think Riley (with this spelling) is a chavvy name.

I would never have used it however as that was the name of our very grumpy siamese cat as a child which in turn had been named after my Dad's car (which he had been made to sell when I was born!!).

However if ever met a real life human Riley I'm sure I would start to associate it with them
