Please help us decide between our top two names...

For a boy we are deciding between Frank and Rupert, and for a girl between Madeleine and Ottilie (nn Lottie).

This is DC3, Madeleine and Rupert were on the cards for the previous two but Frank and Ottilie we have only decided on this pregnancy, which worries me a bit that we might go off them in time (ie at least we know Madeleine and Rupert are keepers).

But then we do worry that Rupert is just too posh..(we're not).

So please help us out..

Madeleine or Ottilie/Lottie?

Frank or Rupert?

Thank you!

Rupert & Ottilie for me. Ignore the remarks about 'posh' names - it seems on this site you just can't win.

Kayzr · 20/01/2012 19:06

Rupert and Ottilie I love those names.

Madeleine is nice too but not as nice. Frank is awful.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/01/2012 19:06

Rupert and Madeleine - both gorgeous.

Frank - ugly

If you like Madeleine but not Maddie, how about Marianne/Marrie/Mimi/Minnie?

Abcinthia · 20/01/2012 19:08

Madeleine and Frank.

Ottilie is really nice as well though. I've never come across it before.

Rupert, just isn't my cup of tea.

Rupert and Ottilie

I can't say Frank wihout images of Mike Reed and Pat's earrings running through my mind!

Madeleine is so done as well. Every third little girl seems to be called it!

Thank you everyone! V mixed/divided opinions - alll helpful and man of which chime with my thoughts and worries!

I really would like to chafe my other dc names as I do think that is a big factor, but really really don't want to make myself identifiable! Our Ds has a top ten name (so have ruled out another), our DD is much less common (not even top 100) but still known. I do worry that using Rupert, although not as posh anymore, would just look a bit 80s sloaney when combined with our DD name! Frank is a better bet from that point of view I think!

Thanks again all - lots of food for thought!

Madeleine not done round these parts. Not uncommon but not everywhere. Ottilie could be the next big thing. So difficult to predict!

FWIW, I think they are both lovely names

I prefer Frank as a shortening for Francis (you could use Frankie as a nn either way). Ottilie is a bit frilly/fussy for me, and would tend to assume that a Lottie was really a Charlotte (not that this is necessarily a problem).

mathanxiety · 21/01/2012 06:53

Madeleine and Frank are lovely.

Lena and Lennie are nice nns for Madeleine.
Frank is lovely as a nn for Francis.

Rupert -- how confident are you that your child will have no difficulty pwonouncing his Rs?
Ottilie -- upper crusty French.

peggyblackett · 21/01/2012 07:02

Frank and Ottilie!

1sttimetryer · 22/01/2012 10:39

I think you should just call her Lottie and not Ottilie and i love Rupert :)

fivefoottwowitheyesofblue · 22/01/2012 10:45

Lottie and Maddie both v popular round here, so would go with Tilly as a nn as suggested up thread.

I don't like either of the boys names. I do think that Rupert is posh and also struggle to imagine a Rupert as 'head of the family' iykwim; also I can't imagine a newborn as Frank.

changer22 · 22/01/2012 10:48

If you like Lottie, I would name her Lottie.

I know a Ned who is just that and a Joe and a Tom. I don't understand naming children one thing and calling them something else. I know 2 Harrys who are really Henrys. It must be so irritating when they change classes at school to have to correct them.

So my vote is for Frank and Lottie.
