Carol is a male family name.
I would love to use it.
But in 2012 I just couldn't do that to a boy

We can't Charles/Charlie and Carl is a bit too much neighbourse for me

So we have just got Cary to play with.
But does it sound to girly. But then Cary Grant was a bit manly.

Opinions please?

Oh dear... Sad I dislike very much... Both Carol and Cary.

CaptainMartinCrieff · 16/01/2012 14:06

I can't think of any nicknames or anything.

MerryMarigold · 16/01/2012 14:06

I think Cary is nice if pronounced Care-y rather than 'Carry'. I know an Irish one.

kasbah72 · 16/01/2012 14:06

What about Carlo? A LOT more manly than carol!

belgo · 16/01/2012 14:08

Karel is the the germanic version of the name.

Carlo/Carlos are great.

othersideofchannel · 16/01/2012 14:09

Cary Grant is what comes to mind. I don't think that any children today would consider Cary as anything other than a male name if they met a little boy Cary. In other words, Cary is not used for girls these days, is it?

Dolcegusto · 16/01/2012 14:11

How about cory/Corey?

MissGreatBritain · 16/01/2012 14:12

How about spelling it Karel (the Dutch way) pronounced Carl?

FaithHopeAndKevin · 16/01/2012 14:29

Go for Carol as that embarrassing family middle name and use what you want as a first name Grin

oikopolis · 16/01/2012 15:26

I know a male Carroll who is a massive hit with the laydeez. He wears it perfectly. However he did go to a public school... which makes things a bit different eh...?

Carl is underused and classic imo.
I do also like Carey, though admittedly it's slightly girly sounding too.

Littlecherublegs · 16/01/2012 18:18

I wouldnt go for Carol or Cary for a boy, just too feminine!

How about:
Carlos
Carlton
Carl / Karl
Caleb
Carlito
Charlton
Carlson

Sorry, struggling a bit!

Could you maybe have one of these names as a middle name and something totally different for first name?

JestersHat · 16/01/2012 20:12

From your OP you obviously know that Carol is derived from Charles. I agree one of the other Charles-related names would be good.

I like Carlo, Carlos, Caleb and Carlton as suggested above.

Or how about Arlo, which can be an Italian variation of Charles?

Dee03 · 16/01/2012 21:35

I love Carey Smile

deste · 16/01/2012 21:39

Carey is cool but the name Karl, Carol is my biggest nightmare of a name. Any Karl I have known has been a prat.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 16/01/2012 21:43

Caleb is lovely

bobbledunk · 16/01/2012 21:51

Cary can also be a girls name? Carey Mulligan? He will hate you for calling him after an actress, the spelling doesn't matter it sounds the same.

Why don't you start looking for some masculine names that won't cause him to be bullied at school?Hmm

Dontbugmemalone · 16/01/2012 22:04

Karol is Polish boys name meaning Charles. If that helps at all.

nooka · 17/01/2012 06:49

I know that Cary Grant was a guy, but I've never met anyone called Cary, just girls/women called Carey. I'd opt for Carol as a middle name to be honest.

JestersHat · 17/01/2012 09:32

I woudn't use Carol as middle name. There's always the "what's your middle name?" conversation at school and everyone remembers the "unusual" ones...! There will also be form-filling throughout life and there will be jobsworths who say "that's a female name, stop messing around, what's your real middle name?"

BlastOff · 17/01/2012 09:38

He will not thank you for Carol (isn't it Carroll for male version?) anywhere in his name. Seriously. I agree that a variation like Cary is your best option. If you can't have Charles/ charlie as a first name, could you have it as a middle name?

Louplet · 17/01/2012 10:33

I would use Cary pronounced to rhyme with Gary like Cary Grant. A great name. Carey rhyming with fairy is IMO a girl's name and so just as bad as using Carol.

SilentBoob · 17/01/2012 10:35

Life ain't easy for a boy named Carol.

TinkerMaloo · 17/01/2012 10:58

Charlie is the best out of all the names on this thread! I would never call a boy carol or cary... or lucy or amanda for that matter ;)

BlueChampagne · 17/01/2012 15:49

Conrad is the answer then
