i love the nickname possibilities of Edward, especially Ted and Teddy but not sure I like Edward. Can anyone suggest similar classic names with nn that could be changed with age if he wanted to?

Oliver. Can be Ollie or Ols. I didn't realise it was number one when I chose it as I didn't look at any lists. Didn't matter as ds was the only one in his nursery out of 36 and is the only one in his school year (age 7). We don't know any other Olivers either.

Frederick (Freddie, Fred, Ricky, Rick, Eric)
Alexander (Alec, Alex, Al, Lex, Sandy, Xander)
William (Will, Wills, Willy, Bill, Billy, Liam)
Theodore (Theo, Ted, Teddie)

I was going to suggest Edward, as I have one and think it's a lovely classic name, with as you say lots of possibilities for nicknames. It's also relatively uncommon, so you're unlikely to have a class full of Edward's.
