DD is called Isla (6 years ago names wasn't even in top 100 grrrrr), and currently dithering over girls' names for bump. We both quite like Alice, but I am discounting because I think Isla and Alice sound far too similar, DH thinks I am nuts.
Thought I would offer to mumsnet jury. :)

Love Alice, you are nuts! :)

Clandy · 01/01/2012 22:25

Not too similar in my opinion starts with a different sound and ends in a different sound, but sounds like your not overly keen so possibly better to to rethink and find a name you are happy with

Hulababy · 01/01/2012 22:27

I don't think they sound similar.

lollystix · 01/01/2012 23:05

No - think they're quite complimentary in sound but not too similar

nooka · 01/01/2012 23:24

I don't think you are nuts, but think the names go together just fine.

squeak2392 · 01/01/2012 23:40

I think Alice and Isla is fine.
I know what you mean though, as I feel the same way about Alice and Eliza/Elizabeth.

oikopolis · 02/01/2012 01:49

I would never say they sound similar.

imaginethat · 02/01/2012 01:54

I'm with you, I think they sound similar.

sashh · 02/01/2012 05:03

It depends on your accent - thick lancashire accent they are similar but RP different.

Where do you live?

3isamagicnumber · 02/01/2012 12:14

I can see where you're coming from, they could sound similar-ish.
I personally wouldnt pick them.

Polkadotfanatic · 02/01/2012 12:21

Alice is gorgeous. You should definitely go for it. I can see where you might think that they sound the same as they are both quite 'vowel-y' but they are both adorable :)

Dee03 · 02/01/2012 12:22

My ds1 is Liam and ds2 is kian...I was worried for a bit that they were very similar but kian was the only boys name I wanted, so we went for it and it's been fine....they are 12 and 14 now and no-one has ever mentioned that they are similar....and I hardly ever say their names together so what does it matter Smile

SilkStalkings · 02/01/2012 16:24

I think Alice and Isla are better than Isla and something else ending in a eg Leah or beginning with eg Amelia.

fluffygal · 02/01/2012 16:37

My daughters are Lana (with a long aahhh sound) and Zanna (with a short a sound, like hannah). I did worry they were too similar but Zanna was the only name we liked so we went with it. Sometimes I think its too similar and worry what people think, but at the end of the day they aren't going to go through life joined at the hip so who cares?

fluffygal · 02/01/2012 16:38

Oooh also, meant to say Alice and Isla sound fine together, not too similar at all.

lottiegb · 02/01/2012 17:49

I don't see them as similar at all, one ends in a vowel the other doesn't, I'd need you to explain how they seem similar.

lottiegb · 02/01/2012 17:50

Vowel sound (obviously!)

Hassled · 02/01/2012 17:52

Your DH is right. Not the same at all.

Northernlurker · 02/01/2012 17:54

Dh is right - you are nuts!
