What do you think to these names for our DD. Her middle name will probably be May (my nan's middle name), her surname starts with F. We wanted something that could be ageless, classes, "intellectual / creative" sounding (but on really odd), not too "girlie" sounding but with a cute NN.

Edith (nan's first name, but is it too "Old")
Amelia (a favourite but maybe to popular)
Emilia (alternative to above but would she have to correct people a lot)
Alina (has Polish origin like me and DP's favourite)
Sophia
Alexa

Any other suggestions are welcome.

I actually like Alina

pourmeanotherglass · 21/12/2011 22:43

not keen on Alexa, the others are all lovely names. I think I'd choose Alina because it is unusual.

lisalisa · 21/12/2011 22:46

sophia

TeamSledward · 21/12/2011 22:48

I really like Alina, too.
Fairly certain she'd be the only one in her class at school.
I love Edith - Edie but appreciate it may be a bit too old.

Alina May sounds lovely. (Is it pronounce Aleena?)

dozyrosierednosyreindeer · 21/12/2011 22:56

TeamSledward My Nan's NN was Edie so not too odd. Yes it's pronounced Aleena.

DP is now sat cheering "woo Alina is the best see" I think it might be becoming my favourite too as it goes well with May.

Alina's lovely, just the right amount unusual and slightly exotic.

dozyrosierednosyreindeer · 21/12/2011 23:09

Apologies just reread my OP and it was meant to say classless not classes (not posh or chavvy)

Edith -- OK. I would nn Edie, which I love.
Amelia -- the name of a type of birth defect. Would never use.
Emilia -- better than Amelia, but spelling will always be an issue.
Alina -- LOVE. PLEASE USE THIS.
Sophia -- like.
Alexa -- prefer Alexandra.

LaFilleSurLePont · 22/12/2011 16:15

Edith is lovely. It's not too old imho. That's my favourite.

Amelia is nice,but very popular.
Emilia is nice.
Not a big fan of Alina but it's ok.
Sophia is lovely, but very popular too.
Alexa is nice.

That's not very helpful I know.

Rhubarbgarden · 22/12/2011 16:19

Lucia, Georgia, Sylvie, Elsa

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 22/12/2011 18:40

Alina or Edith would be my choices.

Alina goes better with May although both are lovely.

How does the Edith run with the F? Most of the time you would just say first and surname. Does it get too tongue tied with the th/f thing?

KatAndKit · 23/12/2011 09:29

I would pick Alina. It sounds lovely. I actually like Amelia too but there are so many little Amelias these days, and Alina sounds that bit more unusual, without being wacky and ridiculous.

Angie03 · 28/12/2011 17:21

I like Alina (very much) and Sophia

breatheslowly · 28/12/2011 17:25

Another vote for Alina here too. Way too many Amelias, Emilias and Sophie/Sophias about.

Doozie · 28/12/2011 19:09

Love Emilia. Sophia & Amelia also beautiful. Edith is ok. Prefer Alexandra to Alexa. Sorry don't like the sound of Alina at all.

Letchlady · 28/12/2011 21:12

I used to teach an Alina. Lovely girl, lovely name... I'd deffo go with that Grin

BelleTheBeatnik · 28/12/2011 22:23

Love Amelia/Emilia and I don't think the spelling of the latter would be too much of an issue because it's still quite well recognized. I also think Alina is lovely! It's unusual but still has an elegant sound to it, and I like the nickname Lina. Have you considered the spelling Alena, or perhaps the variations Alyona or Alyena?

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 28/12/2011 22:24

Betty
Pearl
Penny
