Numerous middle names-quirky or daft?

My daughter is almost a year old, named in some haste with a fairly plain name and one more interesting middle name. I've never really clicked with her name, as a name, don't like nicknames etc, but it is her now so not going to change it.

I have been planning to add another middle name, a bit more interesting, but can't decide between two, which are both three syllable names. Would it be ridiculous to give her three middle names altogether? It probably wont be relevant to anyone outside the family. But she may hate it.

We can't have any more children, so I wonder if I am going a little overboard knowing I won't name another baby...

All of mine have two middle names which seems a little expressive:)

However, it all depends how they flow from one to the next rather than specifically the number of names,

I was given a few middle names and frankly, it is annoying. I've even ditched a couple by now unless it is for the passport or whatever. However I do really appreciate why I have each one of my names...and have lumbered my sons with more than one middle name too (although not as many as me!) Grin If it's to be your only dc and the names are important to keep aliv, just do it, but don't feel offended if she doesn't always use them a she grows up!

manicinsomniac · 18/12/2011 21:44

Both mine have two middle names. I don't think I'd give any more than two personally

AnotherMincepie · 18/12/2011 22:54

More than two middle names would be very unusual. Can we help you choose between the two? Or could you just use them as unofficial nicknames?

UniS · 18/12/2011 22:57

2 middle names is good for a cricketer, Smith .J.C.H looks much classer than Smith .J

Thanks all, I think I've been nudged towards picking one, rather than going with the whole florid concoction. The two names are Susannah and Lydia, and we will prob go for the latter as there is a family connection too. I had wanted it for a first name, but was put off by Groucho Marx, maybe less prominently is better.

I very mch appreciate your replies!

Lydia the taaaaatooooed ladee !!

Sorry. It's a fine name and there aren't many who'd know now!

Speaking as one with 2 middle names, that is plenty- there is never enough room on a form!

mintymellons · 20/12/2011 10:29

My DDs don't have middle names at all. Don't see the point. HTH!

wahwahwah · 20/12/2011 10:32

I never use mine. I worked with someone who used A as a middle name. No actual middle name, just an A.

VikingWenceslas · 20/12/2011 11:05

DH and I have got two (horrible) middle names each, we gave our DCs similarly horrible double middle names. Oh and they've both got double barrelled surnames.

DD's full name is something like this:

Sara Doriane Elizabeth Durelle Dorance

We do actually love her.

VikingWenceslas · 20/12/2011 11:06

And we are being punished for it; filling out school enrolment forms etc is a nightmare.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 20/12/2011 12:21

The point of middle names is to show that you don't lack imagination, MintyMelons. Wink :o

HappyCamel · 20/12/2011 12:31

Given that she's nearly a year I'd leave it. How will you explain your reasoning to her later?

It might be a faff on forms for her that her birth certificate is different too. Maybe you could find a nick name that suits her instead.

MamaLazarou · 20/12/2011 15:06

I would leave it, TBH - it seems a bit extraneous after a year.

I must admit, I do sometimes regret giving my son three middle names, and usually only use the first one on forms and stuff.

GetDownNesbitt · 20/12/2011 16:07

Both my boys have two middle names for the cricketer initial - husband insisited that they had to be XYZ Nesbitt so they could be in the MCC!
