Hi All, absolutely stuck between these two names which I love.

Sophia was always top of my list for years and years but in the past few months Sylvia has come into the mix and i'm getting more and more drawn to it. Really love the nickname Sylvie that goes with it too. Any views either way would be much appreciated - thanks!

I'd go for Sophia. It's a lovely classic name.

I like Sylvia, but Sylvie in particular is trendy and will date (Sylvia less so I think).

Sylvia definitely.

(I don't like Sophia, you don't know whether to say "Sof-ee-a" or "Sof-eye-a" and some people may even say "Sophie-a". And I think it's a bit clunky somehow, maybe because Sophie is so well known it sounds a bit 'extra' with an added 'a').

My lovely SIL is a Sylvia. The name has really grown on me so I'd pick that!

Sylvia is lovely and slightly more unusual. Plus the name of a great author Smile

Thanks for the views! I must say for the past couple of weeks i've been veering more towards Sylvia...

Definitely Sylvia love it. Far too many Sophie/Sophia type names most classes hvae at least one.

WowOoo · 02/12/2011 20:29

Sylvia - mysterious, intelligent, bemusing.
I have had a glass of wine, but that's what I think. Sophie is nice.

daveywarbeck · 02/12/2011 20:41

Going against grain on thread, Sylvia is a bit old lady. Not even old lady actually, more 60 year old lady. Sylvie is lovely DD is called Sophia and I love it so there all you one in every class types.

Sorry but Sophia/Sophie has been done to death. Davey you should be backing Sylvie to prevent further Sophie/Sophia expansion. Its almost as ubiquitous (sp) as flipping Eve/Evie/Eva. There are other names!

daveywarbeck · 02/12/2011 21:58

I am backing Sylvie. It's a lovely name. Ubiquity of names doesn't bother me, I was one of four Helens in my primary school class.

Thanks! A friend of a friend just had a baby girl this morning and named her Sophia. I think Sylvia with Sylvie as a nickname may be the way to go.
