I love this name, and have always wanted to use it for a DD. I'm not keen on unusual names and having grown up with a really difficult name to spell I wanted to use one that everyone knows.

However I'm now a bit unsure because some people I've mentioned it too have said it sounds old-fashioned (and it's true they are dying out, it's more our generation) and DP went as far to say "what kind of a name is Amanda" (although he seems keen on ethnic names from his country, which I really wouldn't want especially as a first name)

Any thoughts?

My friend is an Amanda.
It is never shortened to Mandy ever!!
It's often shortened to Mands which she likes or Mand but most people call her Amanda.

I think it's great to go with any name you love especially if it's a revival! I'm just surprised Amanda is being revived already but not dissing your choice, I have lovely friends called Amanda and I've just named my daughter Winnifred!

likethemoon · 27/11/2011 17:01

ceecee, Winnifred is a lovely name and I'm sure your DD is too! I was also pleasantly surprised that so many others liked it as well, especially after all the comments I have been getting in RL.

I like it and it is in a different league from Winifred which is dire.

I like Mandy more than Amanda, actually. I thought of it for our DD but it would've been a disaster as my DP is Andy.

Always best not to tell too many people what name you are planning to use to avoid comments like that from exotic fruits

If you are OK with Mandy, then go ahead. Mind you, I've only known one Mandy, the others have all been Amanda. One of them was sometimes called 'Amandine' (said 'A-mon-deen' in the French manner) so there you have an example of an elongated nn.

ChooChooWowWow · 29/11/2011 16:03

I got called Randy Mandy as well. I love my name but as a child was always called Mandy.
Woe betide anyone who tries that now I am Amanda,

Milly and Molly have enjoyed recent popularity, maybe it's Mandy's turn Smile

Mind you, there is that awful Barry Manilow song, so I'd stick with Amanda. Grin

Our hampsters are called Milly, Molly and Mandy Grin

Love Amanda too. Had a friend with that name and the nn was Mindy.
