I'm quite taken with the name Theodore if baby is a boy. I was chatting to husband's relatives today and mentioned it - two of them burst out laughing. Other dss are similar, older names. They are being ridiculous aren't they?

Yes, it's a great name!

GodKeepsGiving · 23/11/2011 02:11

Thank you! I think that they think I'm a bit stuck-up. Oh well, never mind x

Yes, lovely! Theo or Ore for short, Theodore for long.

(The first Theodore I knew was a boat, and I think it's a lovely name for a boy too!)

Kayzr · 23/11/2011 05:27

It's a lovely name. I'd love to be able to use it.

LAbaby · 23/11/2011 05:45

I love it, had it on my list with teddy as a nickname.

Montsti · 23/11/2011 06:37

I don't mind it but it does seem to be very "in" at the moment. Popularity doesn't put me off if a name is classic and always popular I.e. William/Oliver/Thomas/James etc..but "faddy/trendy" does...but it seems as though many others on here disagree completely with this opinion. One thing I would say is, if you love it go for it regardless of trends/popularity etc..otherwise you may well regret it later..

MudAndGlitter · 23/11/2011 06:40

It is lovely.

planetpotty · 23/11/2011 06:56

It's lovely but personally I would day to day use Theo.

Frenemies? Bit rude/nasty to laugh at any nameSad

Yes, it is lovely!

Wormshuffler · 23/11/2011 07:14

I love it too and wish to call bump that if we have a boy, DH on the other hand thinks it is "a black babies name" (we are white) not in a rascist or derogatory way, just that the two people that spring to his mind when he hears the name are Theo from the cosby show and Theo the footballer. So we are struggling to get past that. This wasn't helped when we asked his brothers advise who said "it's up there with Leroy". Blush so what!!

GodKeepsGiving · 23/11/2011 07:16

Thanks everyone. I am a bit concerned that it's very in right now so I might opt for Theophilus instead, but I think any variant of the name sounds lovely. The relatives mentioned (without wanting to be unkind) seem very keen to avoid anything that could be interpreted as a classic - different value systems in some respects. Still, they are usually kind. I have had little sleep so this probably doesn't sound the way it should.
Thanks for the reassurance everyone Smile

Wormshuffler, people can be so offensive. I don't think it's a black name either. It's a very old and lovely name. BIL sounds less than helpful Smile

Yes it is a very lovely name. Ignore the naysayers.

LaFilleSurLePont · 23/11/2011 07:38

It's a great name.

TopazMortmain · 23/11/2011 08:57

My top tip is to keep all potential names secret until after the birth so you don't get naysayer relatives poking their oars in... Am maintaining a firm silence on all our choices. Just nodding politely at all the suggestions.

Here's to baby Theo Smile

NewsClippings · 23/11/2011 10:14

It's a lovely name :)

DaisySteiner · 23/11/2011 10:17

Am a bit Angry that's it's fashionable at the moment because I named my ds it years ago when it was still very unusual. I don't much like Theo as a nn so he was known as Teddy when little and is now Ted which I really like and is pretty cool IMO.

Indith · 23/11/2011 10:21

It is a great name.

But yes, all possible names should be kept secret until birth to avoid bad reactions.

Baby I'm currently pg with will most probably be called Arthur which I can imagine raising eyebrows with relatives but tough shit, they don't get to find out until he is born and only nice comments are allowed around a squishy new baby Grin.

iloveberries · 23/11/2011 10:27

Theo is cute :)
Theodore makes me want to sing the chipmumnks theme "alvin, simon, theodore", or "alvin, simon, pee on the door" as we used to sing as kids ;)

kreecherlivesupstairs · 23/11/2011 10:28

Theophilis P Wildebeest is what springs to my mind.
Theo is a great name. It is actually Greek and means given by god or something.
DD was going to be Theodore if she had a winkle.

GodKeepsGiving · 23/11/2011 11:07

kreecherlivesupstairs I had completely forgotten about that! Many happy hours laughing with my mother....thanks for the memory Thanks.
