Alexander - Alex, Xander
Quentin - Quinn, Quent
Edward - Ed, Eddie, Ned

But why don't you just choose a name you love, regardless of whether it is a long name or nickname Hmm?

Nicholas and Nick.
I wouldn't worry about nicknames, he will get called something else entirely!

exotic, we chose a girls name that has potential for several different nicknames as well as being good in itself just because it gives dd a bit more flexibility when she's older.

I like that about my name - I changed it in my later primary years from a more girly nickname used when I was small to a different common shortening that I felt suited me more.
