I love it

Dh's suggestion is scipio africanus.

SandStorm · 19/09/2011 14:23

I would think of Richard Wilson in Merlin.

wellwisher · 19/09/2011 14:24

No, it's poncy and awful. Potential for gay-related teasing is astronomical.

Also, shouldn't it be pronounced Gheeze (hard G, rhymes with sneeze)? Like Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge?

What's wrong with just Guy, anyway? or Angus/Magnus/Fergus/Rufus if you like the two-syllable rhythm and the "us" at the end?

tryingtoleave · 19/09/2011 14:28

Actually, if you stick to gaius, then if you have a girl later you could call her lesbia. It's very poetic, you know...

Vivamus, mea Lesbia, atque amemus

TrillianAstra · 19/09/2011 14:46

re Gonville and Caius - the guy was named "Keys" but when he gave his name to the college he decided to keep the pronunciation but make it look a bit posher by spelling it Caius.

greenzebra · 19/09/2011 15:25

battlestar galactica everytime.

wellwisher · 19/09/2011 17:36

Trillian, I never knew that! A sort of reverse Hyacinth Bucket, then Grin

CoteDAzur · 19/09/2011 17:53

Do you want him to be the butt end (forgive the pun) of homosexual jokes throughout his late childhood and adolescence?

smellimelli · 19/09/2011 21:25

I love it and want to call DS2 this. Sadly DH is a "little" more conservative than I am, so we have settled one Guy (but in my head I will add a little "us" at the end!)

DigOfTheStump · 19/09/2011 21:38

I know one, gets called both Guy and Gus. Tis actually quite cool.

babynamesgrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 19/09/2011 23:57

He will be called gay arse.

Do you mean the name Caius? It's fine with a k sound.
I think Gaius will be bullied endlessly about being gay..

FrankH · 20/09/2011 02:41

Unfortunately the real name of the incestuous emperor Caligula.

However also the first name of Julius Caesar.

MmeBucket · 20/09/2011 03:20

DH has a cousin who named his child Gaius. It is much ridiculed all around. It probably doesn't help the middle name is Maximus, either.

LiviaAugusta · 20/09/2011 08:17

I quite like it but it is maybe going a bit too far on the Roman names front. Having said that I know of a child called Trajan which is the best name ever.

pixiestix · 20/09/2011 08:53

at Gaius Maximus. Why would they do that to their child, why??

tryingtoleave · 20/09/2011 11:44

In that case, frankH, a sister could be called Drusilla.

Stormwater · 20/09/2011 12:55

Gaius Maximus is surely from Life of Brian?

Tortoise · 20/09/2011 13:05

I know a girl called Gaia which always makes me think of Gaius.

phlossie · 21/09/2011 21:44

I was going to say Gay-Arse. The same reason we've had to veto Titus (tight-arse).

AgathaTrunchbull · 23/09/2011 20:39

I love Gaius and find it so annoying that it really wouldn't pass muster in a modern school. Teenagers seem to naturally mispronounce it (even with Merlin to refer to). Having said that, kids get used to unusual names and can deal with them. I taught a Hardik once...

Have you considered going for one of the early (and later disused) Roman praenomina, e.g. Kaeso or Numerius?

SpeedyGonzalez · 23/09/2011 20:46

Another one here who's reminded of the brilliantly execrable 'is-he-or-isn't-he-a-Cylon' Gaius Baltar.
