Thoughts and nicknames on the name Sachin?

Hi, I was wondering what everyone thought of the boys name Sachin? I am not Indian - I am an Aussie living in the UK. I just love the name, and no I am not into cricket.

Wondering what people think of the name with an anglo saxon surname and how you would shorten - Satch, Sach etc?

How do you pronounce it??

"Saccharine" was my first thought, but no idea what the name means - and would not have known if boy or girl.

I think it is very closely connected with cricket and you would get asked "as in tendulkar..."

I tend to think you should have some cultural link to the names that you choose but thats just me.

would abbreviate as Satch I think

If it's pronounced Satch-in I really like it, if Sack-in - not so good!

Hi, thanks for your comments. You pronounce it satch-in. Yes I was worried about not knowing if it was a boy or a girl. I do really like it, but with no Indian heritage not sure if it is too much. Think Satch is a cute nickname, but would not want a name that is likely to get teased.

Ah - it is difficult choosing a name. I also like Sascha for a boy, but again am worried about the whole boy/girl things.

Sacha/Sasha is the diminutive of Alexander/ra so you can call them Alex and also Sacha (Sasha) if you wanted to.

If Woody Allen can call his son Satchel, I don't think you should have any worries about Sachin. And then there's Sacheverell Sitwell ...

It is a lovely name, but I wouldn't use it unless I had a link to the sub continent.
What about Duncan or Gavin or Adrian?

I'm considering this name also but not sure about it for different reasons. Some days i love it, other days I don't like the sound of it. Would be interested to hear more views too.

My DS will have an anglo-saxon surname as well, (although he will be half indian) and I think it will go nicely.

Personally I don't think it matters if you don't have a cultural link to the name and if you love it go for it. particularly so, given this name doesn't sound overly indian and if you didn't know it was Indian i think it would be difficult to guess its heritage.

The Sachin I know gets Satch - Must admit that I love the name.

I don't follow cricket so I don't have that association; I'd never seen that name before. Words like 'sacking' and 'sad chin' and 'satchel' and 'saccharine' come to mind - personally, I'm not keen.

It's a great name and in fact it is one of my best friend's husbands name. His nn is Satch. But they are both of Indian origin. I just don't think it works if you're not Asian or have no connection to it at all.

I immediately thought of Tendulkar too Unless you are of Indian origin I'd steer well clear.

Never heard of the cricketer and first time I've ever heard the name. Didn't know it was an Indian name so wouldn't think anything of it if you didn't have any links. I like it.

I went to uni with someone called Sachin and he was always Satch as a nn. Really nice name whatever your nationality.

What about if I used the spelling Satchin? Would it make less word associations that helendigestives mentions? I guess it would also be slightly more distant from the cricketer too.

I really like Satch as a nn too - just have in my mind what my friend told me when choosing a boys name - 'good on the football field, good in the boardroom' and not sure it fits both of these strongly....
