Boys names, What's your favourite?

We're completely stuck on a boys name. I'm a teacher so most modern and common names make me think of a past pupil (not always good). I like some old names, unusual (but not too) and nothing too long. Some of the names we've liked but not agreed on are:
Ralph, Alvin (too chipmonkish), Ely, Noah, Raoul, Reuben and Robin.

What would be your absolute favourite name? Already picked a girls name.

Ely is a town. Please don't. It's Eli for the name.

Ralph is nice

WhiffOfBath · 30/08/2011 19:22

Of those, Ralph. I personally like Reuben, but it's cropping up on MN far too often for my liking.

KatieScarlett2833 · 30/08/2011 19:25

Raoul was the man in the leopard mankini on the Irn Bru advert.

Just don't.

mumnosbest · 30/08/2011 19:58

Eli in DHs mother tongue is a girls name. Agree Reuben is becoming very popular. I heard Ralph this summer and thought it unusual but since then I'm hearing it everywhere.

Also like Felix and Oscar but are they too much like cats names? Same goes for Benji but had a dog called Ben as a kid.

Raoul Moat, not a good person to share a name with.

RueyBoey · 30/08/2011 20:06

Ralph - nope
Alvin (too chipmonkish) - yep agreed
Ely - Eli please, if you can't use it with an i then don't use it at all
Noah - popular but really nice
Raoul - nope agree with curl
Reuben - love again popular
Robin - really like except DH has a female cousin called it so it shall always be a girls name in my book. But i think that is just me
Felix - too feline but really nice
Oscar - is not feline and nice
Benji- is alright

From your suggestions I like Ralph and Robin the best.

How about Quentin, Tobias or Dominic?

mumnosbest · 30/08/2011 20:48

Unfortunately DH isn't ken on any of the above, I've yet to suggest Oscar or I quite like Tobias.

Joseph, Nathaniel, Euan, Arlo? Also suggesting Elias as an alternative to Eli.

Psammead · 31/08/2011 08:27

Rory?

This is my fave boys' name, which DH just rejected Angry Sad

yousankmybattleship · 31/08/2011 08:35

Eli and Noah are lovely. I agree that Raoul has been ruined by recent events.

BedHog · 31/08/2011 08:41

I love Benji but can't use it as it would make dodgy initials.

Reuben, Robin and Eli are good too.

Ralph and Alvin are a bit '1960s American geek'.
Raoul is that Moat guy who killed a man and blinded a policeman.
Noah is very middle class.
Felix is a cat food.

Kirstle · 31/08/2011 09:09

Reuben, Noah, Stanley, Rex, Tobin, Seth, Amos, James and Matthew?

Cereal · 31/08/2011 09:40

I like Eli and Felix, and Reuben and Noah are quite nice.

If you like Old Testament style names, how about Jacob, Aaron, Amos, Moses, Samuel, Isaac, Saul, Seth, Jonah, Levi, Nathan, John, Solomon, Jonah, Zachary?

minipie · 31/08/2011 11:01

Robin is hands down the best of your options. Lovely name.

Raoul is Moat.
Alvin is chipmunk.
Ralph is a penis (in the Judy Blume book).
Eli, Noah, Reuben are ok but a bit Old Testament for me.
Felix is a nice name but a bit catty
Oscar is ok but sooo popular
Benji is not an adult's name. Benjamin is nice though.
