Too old fashioned?

So, DH and I have some names tentatively picked for first baby (sex unknown at the moment - not sure if we will find out).

Girl:

Josephine
Alice
Kathryn (Kitty - inspired by another thread. I just added it to the list today)

Boy:

Walter (Wally / Walt for short)
Oscar
Edward

We particularly love Walter. But would we be condemning this child to a lifetime of being called "Wally" in a bad way?

Any other suggestions gratefully considered :)

Or you could insist on Waldo, but that would probably bring problems all of its own.

saffronwblue · 30/08/2011 00:44

I love Walter. Walt Whitman. My pick would be Josephine or Walter. There are a lot of little Alices and Oscars around . Edward is sweet .

IHeartKingThistle · 30/08/2011 01:01

When I was little my imaginary Prince Charming was called Walter. Blush

I love it.

SouthernFriedTofu · 30/08/2011 02:00

I love Josephine. DH has vetoed it the bloody bastard

Offspring · 30/08/2011 02:43

I love Josephine also. Followed by Kathryn/Kitty.

Of your boys names I like Edward, not so keen on Walter or Oscar.

PolkaDotsAndPumpkin · 30/08/2011 07:55

Thanks for your input all.

Walter is still pretty high on the list, although I didn't even think about the whole Where's Wally thing!

Alice is probably my favourite girl's name, but is problematic with our surname.

Never mind, we have some time up our sleeves before decisions need to be made :)

Thanks again.

Fab names. Love Kitty and Walter.

redclover · 31/08/2011 10:54

Hey
I love Walter nn Walt
It is different (v's Oscar which is becoming over used)
It is classic yet funky & works from baby to man
You will always find some people who don't like your choice (whatever it is) & there will always be some people who try to shorten to something you don't like BUT this is easily resisted, e.g. My friend Rebecca has always disliked Becky & never let anyone call her it / my friend Sally-Anne has never let anyone call her anything but that. Generally you only have to say once so I wouldn't worry & would go with the name you love.
Re your girls names Josephine is strong & classic but may be a little grown-up for a baby, would you shorten it? Alice is pretty & works baby to woman, and whilst cute sounding I think Kitty works well for all ages too (I knew a lovely Kitty at college).
Good luck x

Him out of Mighty Boosh and partner (Julia comedy woman) have a Walter, I think.

manicinsomniac · 31/08/2011 11:49

I like Alice and Kathryn. Not so keen on Kitty or Josephine.

I love Oscar, like Edward and dislike Walter.

Ephiny · 31/08/2011 11:57

I love Kathryn/Kitty for a girl, Edward is OK, but not keen on the others.

Josephine is old-fashioned in a bad way IMO, and Alice OK but a bit 'wet' and not really a strong name (same for Walter). I always see the 'lice' in Alice which puts me off - that's probably just me though! Oscar has quite an ugly sound for me.

kez1212 · 31/08/2011 12:26

I love Walt! Edward is quite popular due to the vampires. I love Oscar too. I wanted an Oscar, but my sister in law has a cat called Oscar which she calls Oskie-Poskie.... Ruined!

othersideofchannel · 31/08/2011 12:47

Walter, nickname Walt, is lovely and makes a refreshing change from all the little Oscars and Eddies these days. I think you are ahead of the curve Smile.

Alice and Josephine are both nice.

AngelDelightIsIndeedDelightful · 31/08/2011 13:00

Josephine I think of this as being a bit old for a baby, but Josie is adorable.
Alice Used to be a bit meh about this, but a family member has used it and it's now grown on me as a result.
Kathryn (Kitty - inspired by another thread. I just added it to the list today) I prefer the Catherine spelling, but Kitty is lovely. You do need to be ok with people spelling it wrongly all the time though.

Walter (Wally / Walt for short) I really don't like this (sorry).
Oscar Love this, but very popular.
Edward My all time favourite boys' name Smile

Italiangreyhound · 31/08/2011 14:11

Josephine and Edward are my two favourites from your choice. Walter nickname Walt is lovely.

lolajane2009 · 31/08/2011 16:21

I love Edward and alice. so much so I am 37 + 5 with an Edward.

melliebobs · 31/08/2011 16:23

love old fashioned names. Infact my 11month old neice is called Alice.

me and DH have oscar on our list. And i also love Stanley too!

Catsu · 31/08/2011 16:28

You've got some of my favourite names on your list!
I already have an Edward.
Dd was born recently and we had alice, Josephine and philippa on our short list. We went with philippa (pippa) but still really like the other two especially Josephine.
Not keen on oscar or walter

KnickersOnOnesHead · 02/09/2011 13:25

I know lots of Oscars.

ShoutyHamster · 03/09/2011 19:49

I know a Walter. He is Walt. And cool :)

Walter's a great name - agree that you're ahead of the curve.
