because like is just personal taste, but I would appreciate thoughts and comments. I am very uninformed about popular culture (live abroad) so please do tell me if I am using the name of the pub dog on Eastenders, or a popular brand of cigarettes.

Persephone - the story is known as The Rape of Psephone; is this too negative a connotation?

Persimmon

Thirza - or is it spelled Thurza?

Juniper - I utterly love this name but can't help but think of it at jewnipper which is ugly.

Mrytle

For middle names I was thinking

Farrah Joy

Faridah Joy

Something Day

Something Arab then something very positive, possibly a virtue name but nothing dutiful or submissive.

Persimmon is the name of a house builder, if that helps?

Scaevola · 25/08/2011 21:19

I love Persephone (couldn't persuade DH, sadly), but the death associations are very strong.

Persimmon is a fruit, not an established name.

Thyrza is Ok - main association are the Byron poems.

Juniper - sorry, don't like ("did you nip 'er"), also a rather tearful naiad in the Percy Jackson books - probably not that strong/durable an association though.

Myrtle - Moaning myrtle in Harry Potter. Nit the greatest association, and probably fairly durable.

jkklpu · 25/08/2011 21:32

Something is my favourite - really original

allhailtheaubergine · 25/08/2011 21:34

Thanks.

If we go with Persephone or Persimmon I like Percy as a nickname. Very sweet for a middle name. But I have a juggling idea there is already a woman or little girl called Percy. Any ideas who?

Very sweet for a little girl, should have said.

Hulababy · 25/08/2011 21:35

Persephone - I like this. There was a character in Holby City with this name with the nn Penny.

Persimmon - Housebuilders?

Thirza - not keen, sorry

Juniper - very hippish

Mrytle - Moaning Mrytle from Harry Potter

allhailtheaubergine · 25/08/2011 22:15

I really like Persimmon. Is the housing thing too bad? I've never heard of them.

OP posts:
BedHog · 25/08/2011 22:16

Persimmon is a large building company that builds big housing estates.

Percy is the elderly (male) gardener from childrens programme Blue Peter. I think he died years ago actually. Also another character from Harry Potter, and a pig. Never heard it used for a girl.

Myrtle the turtle, and moaning Myrtle from HP.

Farrah Day sounds like Faraday here - something to do with electromagnetism and bunsen burners Confused

Hulababy · 25/08/2011 22:30

Persimmon is a fairly big building firm, nationwide I believe: www.persimmonhomes.com/

Theas18 · 26/08/2011 09:59

You've got to use Thirza. It is dd2 middle name after my favourite " godmother aunt" who was just a lovely Yorkshire lady. Would have been her given name but for dd1 already taking the " th" name as you can tell from my user name lol

Persephone is nice but will rarely be pronounced properly- you will get percy-fone especially if yo choose Percy as nn.

Myrtle- love it too.

Persimmon- nope no good.

allhailtheaubergine · 26/08/2011 10:27

Thurza is lovely, it's true.

Right, question about pronunciation of Persimmon; husband tells me the housing builders are pronounced perSIMun. Is this right? And is ts how you would pronounce persimmon too? I have been saying PERsim-on with emphasis on PER and a definite 'on' at the end, not a weak 'un' sound.

Thoughts?

Thirza I meant. Nice sound.

Persephone - nice but sounds quite pretentious and many people will pronounce it "Percy Phone". How about Penelope or Philippa/Pippa?

Persimmon - house company.

Percy as nickname - definitely not, it's a boys' name

Thirza - or is it spelled Thurza? - never heard of it but it's a bit harsh

Juniper - not keen, reminds me of gin. How about Junita, June, Juno or Juliet?

Mrytle - not keen, but it's the best on your list. If you like plant names how about Daphne, Jasmine, Holly?

AlmaMartyr · 26/08/2011 10:55

We were put off Myrtle because of Moaning Myrtle. Persimmon makes me think of the building company. Others are all lovely.

muminthemiddle · 26/08/2011 11:05

I haven't heard of any of them except for the persimmon homes connections.

largeginandtonic · 26/08/2011 11:22

Love Persephone and Juniper. Am partial to a gin (see name) but it doesn't remind me of that really.

Percy is a sweet nn for Persephone too or Penny. Juno for Juniper also nice.

Not sure on the middle names.

allhailtheaubergine · 26/08/2011 15:00

Anyone care to tell me how you would pronounce Persimmon?

Okay, new one; how about Clementine? How popular is it? My eldest daughter has a very unusual, hippyish rainbow child sort of name. My son has an unpopular but well recognised Victorian grandad name. I don't want to give number 3 a popular name.

I think I am asking too many questions on one thread. I might start a few threads asking specific questions as they occur to me.

OP posts:
Scaevola · 26/08/2011 15:02

Like Persimmon, Clementine would make me think of the fruit, and "Oh My Darling".

I only know one in RL.

Cereal · 26/08/2011 15:27

CLEM-en-tyne.

Hulababy · 26/08/2011 16:02

Clementine is fine, still prefer Persephone though.

Persimmon houses is pronounced per-sim-on with emphasis on sim I think. This is how most people seeing the name will pronounce it because of the link.

Hulababy · 26/08/2011 16:02

Oh and I dobt know anyone named either Persephone or clementine in rl

largeginandtonic · 26/08/2011 18:23

There are a few Clementine's around. It is a lovely name though, don't let that put you off.

Persephone is my favourite i think, it has been on our baby girl list before.
