Is Hugo a bit rah?

Or even a lot rah?

Our little boy will be arriving this week by section and hubby and I are still not sure about names! Hubby's favourite is Hugo and I do like it, but I worry that it is a bit posh for us! We are very middle class! Our children are likely to go to a 'normal' school, rather than a 'posh' one (although they would go to the latter if we can afford it - not seeming likely at the moment - and a lot of our friends' children will, so we fall between the gap a bit). Other shortlisted names are Tobias, Sebastian and Alexander. Older children are Jude and Scarlett. Our surname does begin with an H, but we are happy that the alliteration works in this case. At the moment I think we will be going with Tobias, but hubby would jump at the chance to have Hugo if I could get over my concerns and I did choose the other two names so I feel like maybe I should let him have his favourite?

I have a Hugo.
We are not rah!
I too call him Hugs or Huggy.
My husband's family hate the name so did a lady who stopped me the other day. All she said was "oh"
Others though Love it, it's that kind of name.

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 24/08/2011 05:25

Ridiculously rah.

Wabbit · 24/08/2011 05:28

not as Rah as Tobias! Grin bit gauche that!

I wouldn't personally use Hugo but don't dislike it intensely

Wabbit · 24/08/2011 05:31

omg - didn't see Tobias as one of your choices Blush Still think it's way too Rah

ShoppingForCarbsWithClaire · 24/08/2011 05:44

I agree with saul. You really don't need to worry about being 'Rah' if you use the word hubby.

We have a Hugo, 17 months. He gets called Hugs or Hugzy or Baby Hugs for short. Everyone loves his name. And no, we're not rah.

MummysLittleSunbeams · 24/08/2011 09:36

RAH-ther!

10isenough · 31/08/2011 22:51

My brother is a Hugo and I'm from a regular middle class family not posh. We used to call him huggy bear!

somewherewest · 01/09/2011 09:57

It is incredibly rah, but I tend to find about half the names on here a bit rah (working class Irish background) so mightn't be the best guide Grin.

robino · 01/09/2011 10:15

As long as you don't drop your h as a matter of course it should be ok! Poor little yougo at the doctor's the other day had more to worry about than sounding raa!

TeelaBrown · 01/09/2011 15:08

I like the name Hugo.

When I open my mouth however, people sometimes give me dirty looks as though I may have been personally responsible for oppressing their ancestors.

"dickish sort of posh" I'm afraid. Grin Grin

Seriously, it's a cool name. Will he be the only one in a school full of Stephens and Davids though (not implying there's anything wrong with those classic English names btw!)? If you have older children, you must know the lay of the land at the school they attend.

mumofbumblebea · 01/09/2011 15:51

prefer hugh but i don't see hugo as "rah". i think it's a fab name!

startail · 01/09/2011 16:10

I much prefer Alexander as long as you shorten it to Alex.
There was a 2 year old in the shoe shop yesterday, too long floppy blond curls and designer clothes and his mum called him Xander - somehow it seemed so predictable.

TheBolter · 01/09/2011 16:16

I know three Hugos.

One is from a family that is old-money posh and also half French.
One is from a middle class and down to earth family.
One is from a middle class and v v aspirational family.

Take your pick!

TheBolter · 01/09/2011 16:17

Or should it be 'Hugoes'? Wink

StringOrNothing · 01/09/2011 16:20

Very Rah indeed.

zozzle · 02/09/2011 00:35

yes rather rah!

diddl · 02/09/2011 15:06

It´s not "rah" at all is it?

It´s a lovely name-prefer Tobias, though.

PipFEH · 03/09/2011 20:19

We called him Alexander Raphael and we are shortening to Alex :)
