Impressions of names on our shortlist?

I think we've cut it down to the final shortlist. I would like to know what would be your first impression of hearing a child or adult with these names? Which ones do you think fit best with my other children's names (Owen, Alexandra, Mirabelle).

Boys
Cyrus
Emmett
Franklin in full or with the nickname Frankie?

Girls
Winifred
Gwendolen or Gwendolyn in full or with the nicknames Gwen or Wendy

Frankie is my fave, not sure about the others to be honest but i would choose gwen over wendy.

ragged · 16/08/2011 15:29

I guess Gwendolyn is okay, I even like Franklin a little.
Cyrus & Emmett make me want to heave if I'm honest.

InstantAtom · 16/08/2011 15:31

Cyrus and Winifred.

oohlaalaa · 16/08/2011 15:43

Cyrus - hmmm. its okay i guess. Billy Ray Cyrus comes to mind for me.
Emmett - I like.
Franklin - prefer Francis, with Frank as nn.

Winifred - horredous
Gwendolen - I like, with Gwen as nn.

Out of the above, I think Frank and Gwen are very nice.

oohlaalaa · 16/08/2011 15:43

Franklin is okay, I just dont like as much as Francis. I think of Francis as English and Franklin as American.

ElmMum · 16/08/2011 16:08

Boys
Cyrus - I think of Miley Cyrus, and it sounds very American (not necessarily a bad thing)
Emmett - again, sounds very American to me, a bit country and western, sitting on the porch chewing tobacco
Franklin in full or with the nickname Frankie? - Franklin doesn't make me think of anything in particular, so no associations good or bad. I think it fits best with your other children's names.

Girls
Winifred - makes me think of an old lady, sorry.
Gwendolen or Gwendolyn in full or with the nicknames Gwen or Wendy - makes me think of the Enid Blyton character from Mallory Towers, who was a non-sympathetic character and always whining. I do like Gwen, though and think it works nicely with the other names.

Hope that helps! :)

CurwySwide · 16/08/2011 16:19

Cyrus - no - just reminds me of Miley/Billy Ray
Emmett - like this - reminds me of the Back To The Future
Franklin - no

Winifred - I actually rather like this and think Winnie is a cute nickname
Gwendolyn/Gwendolen - Gwen is ok but really don't like Wendy

LaTristesse · 16/08/2011 17:06

Cyrus - Love it, because of Cyrus Jones, a character in the DMB song Gravedigger (- I appreciate this might not work for you!) Grin
Emmett - Back to the Future, not keen
Franklin - yup, like this!

Winifred - don't like - Winnie (the Pooh), or Fred as NNs - not keen on those either!
Gwendolen - don't like - reminds me of either someone from a Malory Towers book or the nutter from Wallace and Grommit (I think she's Wendolene or something though...) As an aside, Gewn is far nicer than Wendy imho!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2011 17:16

Don't like any of the boys' names but am v fond of Gwendolyn.

Cattleprod · 16/08/2011 17:35

Cyrus - I would assume you were a Billy Ray fan and quite possibly had a mullett, with children having matching mini-mulletts
Emmett - Brown handknitted jumper and cord slacks.
Franklin - Mint? Probably a collector of 'the life of Christ in cats' dinner plates!!

Girls
Winifred - A very prim middle aged lady, lives in a village and helps out with the sunday school.
Gwendolen or Gwendolyn - A rather large, lumbering girl who attempts to do ballet dancing without much grace.

brodanbell · 16/08/2011 18:02

I played word association and these are the honest answers I came up with...

Cyrus - Billy Ray
Emmett - Brown (as in Dr. Emmett Brown from Back to the Future)
Franklin - D. Roosevelt

Winifred - prim old lady
Gwendolen - I immediately think medieval princess, wearing a tall pointy hat with a silk scarf flowing from it.

So I suppose Gwendolen is the nicest in terms of images, but I don't love the name tbh.

babycham42 · 16/08/2011 18:03

Like Frank and Winnie.

brodanbell · 16/08/2011 18:04

oh and should add I didn't read anyone elses responses before I wrote my reply.

PercyFilth · 16/08/2011 18:12

The Billy Ray/Miley thing is a bit off-putting, but how about Cyril?
Gwendolyn is OK but a bit ponderous, I prefer Gwyneth.

(I do realise you have arrived at a shortlist, so perhaps it's rude to make other suggestions, but I only offer variations or similar names rather than completely different ones.)

minipie · 16/08/2011 18:12

Gwendolyn and Franklin are the best by far IMO.

mayanna123 · 16/08/2011 18:43

I really like Cyrus - classic, cool and quite underused these days.

I'm not keen on either Gwendolyn or Winifred - both don't sound very feminine imo.

Camerondiazepam · 16/08/2011 20:21

Am I the only person thinking Cyrus the Virus from Con Air?

Emmett would be my pick of the boys' names but not keen on either of the girls' names I'm afraid and don't think they go with your other kids' names either, sorry. Agree with the poster who suggested Gwyneth, much more forgiving.

PercyFilth · 16/08/2011 21:33

Isn't emmet a word for some sort of insect?

Have always thought baby names should be issued by the hospital.

Pregnant ladies just can't cope with this level of responsibility.

Scrub your list completley, make a new one when babe is about a week old.

manicinsomniac · 16/08/2011 22:37

I like Cyrus.

Really dislike all the others sorry, they sound like Granny and Grandad names.

Cyrus and Emmet have the same associations for me as the posters above.
Franklin with Frankie for short is nice, if your last name goes.

Winifred isn't nice, sorry. Gwen (with Gwendolyn on the birth certficate) is nice.
