Shortlist for baby girl with stubborn Greek daddy..

DD is due any day now and we have a shortlist of names and I need help!! DH (and I) want a name that means something to us/our family/ is preferably a family name. It has to fit with our (multisyllable) Greek surname and the names of our older 2 (Cosmo and Alex). Need a first name and 2 middle names (family habit)

Delphi - Dh loves this as he is from very nearby there and I think he thinks "we" have settled on this... I love it too as it sounds very pretty, but I am worried that a) its not a proper name (bit too fancy-pants try hard?) b) the nicknames that I can think of are all awful c) its the name of a computer programming language and a communication technique...

Cryssa - DH loves. My exDH v similar name - unreasonable I think!!

Maria/Marianna - OK, doesn't do anything special for me really

Xanthe - like, don't love

Zoe - like, don't love

Sylvia (Sylvie for short) - my fave, but has no sentimental/family attachment and, is, erm, not very Greek! But I think it sounds a bit more namey IYSWIM

Elizabeth
Victoria ... completely not Greek - my choices!! But could try and make them middle names.

So can you make me a nice name out of this lot? Any other suggestions?

Is it normal to be in such a total tearful hormonal muddle?! About name?! Can't recall this with the other 2 - they were just obvious choices somehow (after FIL/ my brother so Greek and family, tick tick)

Out of all the names I like Delphi the most. I dont htink its try hard and it has a meaning for you both.

I like Codie for a girl too (would poss fit with other DC'S names)

Its completly normal to be hormonal about it, we named DC4 (I liked the name but didnt love it) we then changed it when she was 10 months old to the one we should have choosen but didnt as I said it was too Irish (hormones) and was worried what others would say/think.

Good luck.x

Sushibo · 13/08/2011 21:03

Just realised that, having name changed to protect my wittering hormonal identity, I have completely given my RL self away by naming other DCs.

I beg of you, if you know me in RL, please pretend you have never seen this thread and collude with me that I am calm and in control regarding all things DC3!!

Natalia, Nina, Elli, Eleni, Despina (have some friends who are Greek). Particularly like Katarina (my dd is Katharyn), Zoe, Sofia ... can't think of any more!

LynetteScavo · 13/08/2011 21:05

Delphi is gorgeous.

I like Marianna...maybe as a middle name?

LynetteScavo · 13/08/2011 21:06

Delphi Marianna Elizabeth.

kando · 13/08/2011 21:06

Sorry - just seen you have Zoe!

kando · 13/08/2011 21:06

Oh, yes Lynette - that's lovely!

Hassled · 13/08/2011 21:07

Delphi is lovely and it's a wonderful place. Doesn't sound like anything other than the name of a wonderful place to me. I think it's a great name.

Persephone
Cassandra
Ariadne

MissFenella · 13/08/2011 21:10

Melina - means Honey I think.
Athena

mrspnut · 13/08/2011 21:11

How about Anastasia - very greek and lends itself to lots of nice diminutives.

Our DD1 is called Ana by most family and Annie by her friends.

mogandthecat · 13/08/2011 21:12

I like Delphi, given the connection would not think it too try hard. Would it be pronounced like Del-fee or Delphy (i as in Sophie)?
Also like Sylvie but can see the problem it does not fit your criteria.

What about Marina, Demetria, Ioulia, Ione, Iris (Greek goddess of rainbow)

Sushibo · 13/08/2011 21:21

Loving the suggestions, and calming down slightly.. Have got nods from DH for Katerina and Iris.. although I prefer Catherine (initals DCI/DIC anyone?!)

How about Chrysoula? I have a friend called Chrysoula, nn Soula, I have always thought it was a lovely name.

KristinaM · 13/08/2011 21:32

Eleni , call her ellie

Katerina, call her katie

Dora

Anna

What are your mothers and your MIls names? Your grandmothers? Any potential names there?

I have greek BIl so understand the family name /long surname issues

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 13/08/2011 21:36

My DD (Cypriot DH) is called Lydia, we also considered Sophia, Anastasia, Ariadne, Xanthe and Stella.

I love Delphi I have to say. I wouldn't worry about 'try-hard' names if you have a multisyllable Greek surname - it's kind of expected!

Other names I know - Eleni, Christina, Vasoulla, Eliou, Georgina

MissHonkover · 13/08/2011 21:38

What's the difference between Del-fee and Delphy? I love Delphi!!

KristinaM · 13/08/2011 21:39

Oh yes, stella is lovely. Also phoebe

Lots of the names suggested here work well with cosmo and alex

SamsGoldilocks · 13/08/2011 21:43

I Like Delphi a lot ( I have a friend with a Delphine so it reminds me of them rather than a computer program) and Calliope (Callie for short)

FellatioNelson · 13/08/2011 21:44

Delphi is beautiful. I also LOVE Xanthe. I had it as number 1 on my list for all three of my PGs but I only had boys. All the names are nice except Maria I think, though Zoe and Victoria are a bit run of the mill for my tastes.

What about Daphne? Penelope? Although perhaps not if she would be Penelope Papadopalous. Grin

MissHonkover · 13/08/2011 21:45

Oooh, Xanthe is lovely!

Delphi is nice. I would think of the programming language actually, but don't think most people would make that association. Running joke with DP and me is that if we had twin girls we'd call them Pe(a)rl and Ruby and see if anyone would 'get' it :)

Greek girls/women I know are Eleni, Emilia, Melisa and Sophia. I think Eleni is beautiful actually. Mariana and Katerina are nice, if you're ok with slightly longer names.

Eglu · 13/08/2011 21:53

I think Delphi sounds lovely and not made up at all. I also adore Xanthe. I think both of those would go well with your DSes.

BuntyCollocks · 13/08/2011 21:59

I like Delphi. Also, Ilithya

BaronessBomburst · 13/08/2011 22:05

I like Delphi too. And DH didn't associate it with programming either, at least not until I mentioned it.

Ephiny just told my DH about Pearl and Ruby. He thought it was funny but cruel. Grin
