Helena - how do you pronounce?

I would use HEL-en-a, like Helen but with -a on the end. But some people seem to say Hel-LENA, which seems to make it more French sounding. I'm just curious, if you saw it written down which pronunciation you would use?

saltyseadog · 06/08/2011 22:38

Helen-a. Really don't like Hel-lay-na pronunciation.

MrsRhettButler · 06/08/2011 22:38

Hell-ay-na

Bunbaker · 06/08/2011 22:39

Helen-a here as well (in South Yorkshire)

KeepCalmAndPrayToCastiel · 06/08/2011 22:40

What MrsRB said.

MirandaGoshawk · 06/08/2011 22:43

Like you, Helen-a, unless it's got some sort of accent, in which case it would be Hell-AY-na.

The Spanish version is Elena, pr. El-AY-na.

KeepingUpWithTheCojones · 06/08/2011 22:43

Helen-uh in Brummie accent, Helen-a when I'm speaking properly.

I think it's a lovely name.

Catsycat · 06/08/2011 22:48

Another Helen-a vote here. I really like it.

MetalSian · 06/08/2011 22:49

PIMSoclock · 07/08/2011 08:11

Heleeeeeeeena Grin

stardustn · 07/08/2011 13:13

Yay some people would actually say Hel-eeee-na :o :o This has made my day! :o

My name is Helena (Hel-ee-na) and I can count on one hand the number of times people have seen it written down and said it right!

SaffronCake · 07/08/2011 13:34

Helen-a mostly but I am also aware of He-lain-a so I would immediately feel a bit cautious and be looking for cues to see if I just called said child the right thing.

I love the name, but that lask of surity in how to pronounce it put me right off using it... That said no one pronounces my daughters name the way I d and I don't care. Maybe it's just a Helena thing?

Greythorne · 07/08/2011 14:59

Hell - aina

tammytoby · 07/08/2011 21:25

I know a Helena pronounced Hel-AYNA.

fishandlilacs · 07/08/2011 21:28

Hel-enna.

She'll be called Helly anyway so dont worry.

My dear friend Helena is nicknamed Na-Na :)

GibberingGinger · 07/08/2011 22:12

about 50/50 then, with a few Hel-leenas thrown in for good measure!

I'm not expecting any more children, it's just a name I've always wondered about. I think it's a lovely name, and looks like a lot of you guys do too!. Thanks for all the responses
