Does it sound made up and trashy or refreshing and different?

It's spelt Ngaire, a Maori name I think.

Its lovely! I worked with a Nyree , she would be I suppose about 30 ish now.

Lovely girl and lovely name. And unusual.

I have only seen it as Ngaire as well.

Nyree is from the maori Ngarie. It is a beautiful name.
DD1 has Ngarie as one of her middle names. Im 1/2 maori so it was of importance to me to give my dc maori names to honnor their herritage.

I know a Nyree and a Ngaire. There was an actress in the 70's, Nyree Dawn Porter, that my mum bangs on about sometimes. Something to do with the Forsyte Saga I think. Anyway, she changed her name to the phonetic spelling.

Is it pronounced Nye-ee or Nih-ree?

sorry that was dh writing that for me (im in middle of bf twins!) stupid git spelt it wrong!!! It Ngaire not Ngarie....... dc 1 and 2 are his sdc so i will forgive him (this time).

The name is Ngaire. It seems a little disrespectful to change the spelling from the Maori, IMHO.

There was a Nyree in my class at school. She was called after the actress. I never gave it a thought and I have never come across another one. I can't say I'd pick it though.

Likewise I knew a Nyree, named after the actress. Wouldn't ne my first choice, but is pretty enough.

Well the actress was Kiwi if that helps. And I've since heard enough Nyrees to assume it's now an accepted spelling. If people can spell Niamh Neve...

When I first saw Niamh written down I thought I had misheard the name! However as I'm used to Ngaire, Nyree just looks odd!

I don't like it, personally.

It looks made up, but has a nice sound. The trouble is that if you spell it authentically nob ody (apart from those who know) will know how to pronounce or spell it.
