Dc4 due in 8 weeks

We didn't think we would be having anymore children so used our fav boys name on ds2.

Would it be strange to name this baby if a boy ds2 middle name ?

I wouldn't do it myself. But I do know a pair of brothers who have both names the same- one is Gareth Thomas and the other is Thomas Gareth!

Quodlibet · 22/07/2011 17:46

My DP and his brother have exactly this.

I do find it deeply odd though. Seems like older brother is prototype and younger one is improved version, somehow...

Happymum22 · 22/07/2011 17:49

Just use another name you like.....

MirandaGoshawk · 22/07/2011 17:51

Yes odd. As if there aren't enough names out there or you have no imagination. Or both.

headzookeeper · 22/07/2011 17:53

Ds1 Jack Joseph and Ds2 is Joseph Sean.

Joseph was my late fathers name but my idiotic ex wouldn't let me use it as a first name for Ds1. So when Ds2 came along the day after my dads birthday, DH agreed that Joseph was a good choice.

Incidentally it wasnt till Ds3 was on the way and we were looking in a baby name book that we realised that Jack and Sean are both alternate names for John. So I have a John Joseph and a Joseph John really.

I have asked myself this as I was daft enough to give my son an awesome middle name that I am loathed to discount this time. I have told myself that I can't do it though, and I'm right.

FingandJeffing · 22/07/2011 19:45

I think it's fine. I know someone lovely with 2 lovely boys who has done just that.

wigglesrock · 22/07/2011 20:28

In my husbands family - ds1 middle name is the same as ds3 first name.

jellybeans · 22/07/2011 20:32

I wouldn't do it as would prefer their own new name but it's no big deal really.

I would, outside of the immediate family who would know.

sparkle12mar08 · 22/07/2011 20:52

I wouldn't do this in a million years. Why give your child a second hand name, it smacks of laziness and couldn't-be-bothered-to-think-of-a-new-one-ness. That's how it will come across anyway, regardless of your own reasons for doing so.

HattiFattner · 22/07/2011 20:53

my cousins...

Names changed but....

Matthew Mark
Mark Luke
Luke Matthew

They had no imagination at all...two forgivable, 3 is just too many.

I don't think it's especially strange either - if someone did this I'd probably assume it was a family name that they wanted to pass on to both children or something, but wouldn't think it odd or really give it much thought.

lazylula · 22/07/2011 21:33

My friends have done this, I do not think it strange but it isn't something I would do. Dh suggested ds1's middle name as a name for dc3 if it were a boy but I said no as for me there names are especially chosen for them.

SE13Mummy · 22/07/2011 21:39

We contemplated doing this for DD2 but didn't. DD1's middle name is Mary but we ended up naming DD2 Miriam (another version of Mary).

I have a friend whose middle name was given to her much younger sister as a first name - neither of them have ever minded.

What if the first one decides they'd like to be known by their middle name?

PorkChopSter · 24/07/2011 08:01

I couldn't/wouldn't.

catsareevil · 24/07/2011 08:02

I wouldnt do this. There are so many names out there you must be able to think of a new one for the new DC?

harecare · 24/07/2011 08:05

My sister did this. My Mum finds it very odd, I'm not bothered either way.

MrsOzz · 24/07/2011 08:24

I know a set of 4 (lovely) sisters who all have the middle name Louise!

Martha85 · 24/07/2011 10:02

Not strange at all. If it means a lot to you then go for it. Don't worry what anyone else says. DS1 and DS2 both have middle names we are considering for DC3.

hollyw · 24/07/2011 12:42

No I'd do it
