Really like this name, but unsure of the correct pronunciation. I'm sure someone out there will enlighten me.

Kass-ee-uss with an accent on the first syllable.

(Bemused how you can like a name if you're not sure how to pronounce it, I confess...)

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 22/07/2011 10:39

cass ee us or cash us

Both correct.

GetOrfMoiLand · 22/07/2011 10:39

KASS-ee-uss

How else would you think it was pronounced? Confused

GetOrfMoiLand · 22/07/2011 10:40

Oh x posts turtles.

Would never have thought cash-us.

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 22/07/2011 10:43

I suspect the phonetic pron. is more popular but I have met a couple of children using the cash us version. I think it depends on whether you're intending to use the nn cas or cash.

seeker · 22/07/2011 10:45

Cass ee us. Any other pronounciation is wrong.

How can you like a name if you don't iknow what it sounds like?

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 22/07/2011 10:48

Cashus is a fairly old and correct pronunciation seeker. Some sites will tell you it's the only pronunciation in fact. But they're both absolutely fine as pronunciations.

flopsy1974 · 22/07/2011 10:50

I'd read somewhere that the correct pronunciation was Cash-us. Not so keen on that though.
But if it's pronounced Cass-ee-us. I love it.
Hope that makes sense.

CASS-ee-us.

MotherPanda · 22/07/2011 10:54

Here's a song called Cassius - so you can hear how it's pronounced :)

Lovely name, by the way

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 22/07/2011 10:54

flopsy, I think the cashus pronunciation comes from the Roman word cassus (believed to be the origin of the name) and the pronunciation would have been cashus first. But cass-ee-us is fine if you prefer that. People will go for that anyway if unsure. It's a brill name both ways imo. I considered it (pg with a boy) but dh wasn't keen.

Have a girl next and ask on here how to pronounce Esme. It gets ugly. Grin

bruffin · 22/07/2011 10:55

The boxer Mohammed Ali was born Cassius Clay and was always pronounced Cass-ee-us.

NerfHerder · 22/07/2011 11:07

I think it's like Lucian/Lucien- it can be either way, both equally valid.

Yes, I think Cashus tends to be the American pronounciation. A bit like Marcia being Marsha or Mar-cee-uh.
