Has anyone NOT managed to agree on a baby name with DH/P by the time baby arrives?!

We have a girl's name sorted (and a few reserves) but simply can not agree on a boy's name. We already have one ds and both love his name, and the only other boy's name we both love is taken by our nephew...

Discussions on the subject are becoming unconstructive... just wondering if anyone has failed to agree on a name by the time the baby arrives, and how the compromise was made in the end!

Not only did we not have a name beforehand (even when we knew we were having a boy) but it took us 3 weeks to agree to a name. He ended up with a name neither of us had even considered but that the woman in the next bed at the hospital had suggested!

We hadn't agreed on a boys name before birth. We had a girls name.

Dh caved to my choice in delivery room.

My friend however, found out that dc3 was a boy at 20 week scan and still took 8 days to name him last week. Choice wasn't set in stone until they were in the room to register!

Poor DS remained without a first name for eleven days; and then it took us another fortnight to settle on his middle name.

We didn't have a name - we'd got as far as a very long short list. DD was 12 days early, so did catch us very unprepared, but we went with something in the end (day 5) that hadn't been on any list because it wasn't in any of my books.

And we are all very happy with our choice!

DC4 and DC5 were unnamed until several weeks after birth, because DH vetoed everything I liked but wouldn't suggest anything. The eldest 3 had names sorted well before they were born.

With DC4 we eventually found a name we both didn't dislike (rather than actively liked), and with DC5 I just sat and went through some names, saying what about this one? until he said OK

I'm still :( I didn't get to use the 2 names I had planned to (DC4 boy, DC5 girl).

We were still discussing our DS's name in front of the birth registrar. DP won as my preferred name coupled with DP's surname sounded like a colour you would paint a toilet!

We had a raffle in the hospital.

DS2 born by emergency section on the Sat night, he was whisked off to a hospital in a different city for emergency surgery. DH went with him in the ambulance and came to see me on the Sun night and we tried to agree a name. We decided to each put 5 names into a paper cup and the nurse picked on out for us.

Cheating blighter put the same name in 5 times.

Luckily I do like the name ds ended up with.

Our baby is 5 weeks old and we only think we have agreed on a name today! It's our 2nd boy and we just wanted to be sure.

We had a short list, and one name that we thought was probably 'the one,' but it took us all day on the day he was born to agree on a name that was a combination we'd never thought of before, although both names had been on our original long list!

This is making me feel a lot better. Maybe we should just rest the discussions until the wee man/lady arrives...

I'm getting so frustrated though - there are several boys' names I love, but dh has vetoed but he's yet to propose any he's even halfway keen on.

Not yet, but at 36 weeks and counting, and failing to get DH to engage in conversation about names, I can see us getting there fairly soon. I'm not of the "wait and see what it looks like" school of thought at all. I want it sorted! Hope you get somewhere soon

Both times. With DD we had a shortlist of 5 girls' names but no boys' names. Luckily she was a girl. As soon as she was born, we both agreed that one of those names just suited her somehow.

With DS, I had a few boys' names I liked but couldn't choose for weeks. He was called 'little boy' 'til about 2 days before the deadline for registering the birth. In the end I wrote all the names on bits of paper and floated them in a bowl of water. The name which sank last was what he was called. When I think what some of those other names were, he had a lucky escape

Both times here too. Ds1 was six days old and ds2 was 3 weeks old before he had a name! We had shortlists but wanted to wait and see before we finally decided. Agreeing Ds2's name was a long and painful process because we had both almost decided and agreed a name and then I took one look at him whilst he was being cleaned up a bit and though 'no way'. And dh didn't particularly like the name I then loved. So we talked over and over and over, and it eventually boiled down to the fact that he didn't dislike it as much as I loved it and for me it would have been a deal breaker. So he compromised for me. And I loved him all over again in that moment.

DS1's name was picked out about 3 years before I got pregnant. Then with DS2 we had a girl's name picked out (our choice for DS1 had he been a girl) but found picking a boy's name much harder - DH wanted it to have the same number of syllables as DS1's, and didn't want the name of anyone else in his family, or anything even a little bit fancy (I quite liked Orlando and Sebastian). In the end we narrowed it down to a choice of two, and he picked when DS2 had just been born. We ended up with the name that means the boys are now both characters from our favourite TV show, but he claims this didn't influence his choice...
