What do you think of Alba for a girl? She was a time travelling child in 'The Time Travellers Wife' and quite a cool little lady. I'm wondering if this is making me like it more than I should :)

Have you considered Albany? Bit less Radio Alba/ Alba Electronics but you could use Alba as a nn?

LemonDifficult · 20/07/2011 14:05

Girl or Boy? I assumed it was for a boy but now wondering if for a girl. Not keen on either though.

Alba is a bit like french Albert

BelleEnd · 20/07/2011 14:38

I love it. I wanted Alban for a boy, DH vetoed.

MamaLazarou · 20/07/2011 19:36

Cheap stereo.

BelleStar · 21/07/2011 12:41

I love it! It's on my shortlist. In fact - it is my shortlist! I'm going with the Spanish meaning rather than Scottish. I'm sure there are many names that have loads of meanings depending on the language.

Tortington · 21/07/2011 12:42

its a hi fi from argos FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PEOPLE ......FOR THE LOVE OF GOD

KoolAidKid · 21/07/2011 20:42

Yep it's a cheapo stereo don't do it

Nightstar · 21/07/2011 20:49

I love it for the literary connection but I dont think I would give it to a child, maybe a cat?

ednurse · 21/07/2011 20:49

I love it, a nice Spanish name.

CatherineHK · 03/08/2011 14:48

My 21 month old girl is named Alba. Lots of people were unsure at first, and we heard all of the "cheap electronics" and "Scotland" comments too! But there are hundreds of names that are used for products and that have different meanings in different places/languages! We chose it partly as a lovely Spanish name and partly the TTW connection. Now everyone comments on how lovely and unusual it is - not that it really matters what others think.

I have a friend with an Alba Boo. I like it.

Emilywhitwam · 05/02/2022 01:56

Hi- we love the name Alba and want to name our 5 day old baby it- does you daughter have to spell out/ repeat her name a lot ?! That’s the only thing possibly putting us off x x

Chichimcgee · 05/02/2022 01:57

I thought Alba but yeah cheap stereo put me off 🙈

Kanaloa · 05/02/2022 02:21

It’s not my favourite. Maybe because I’m Scottish so it seems an odd name to me.

Flutterflybutterby · 05/02/2022 03:46

@Hevian

What's the world coming to ? (sound like my mum now)
It's a well known ancient name. Just because it's not in the top 10 doesn't mean it's made up or silly Confused
TakeMe2Insanity · 05/02/2022 06:54

Lovely spanish name.

peaceinourtime · 05/02/2022 11:37

I knew someone who had a child and called her Alba, Its not a name name at all.

scottishnames · 05/02/2022 15:23

As others have said, in Spanish it means 'dawn'; in Latin it means 'white'.

It is also a Gaelic name for Scotland - and for Scottish Gaelic TV - and then it's pronounced Ah-lu-pah (with local variations): forvo.com/search/Alba/gd/

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 05/02/2022 15:53

Zombie

Lilacsparkles · 05/02/2022 19:55

Love Alba, I’ve met one and she was so sweet! It’s cool, pretty and not too popular. I’d go for something like
Alba Florence as a middle name perhaps?

Landofthesummerpeople · 05/02/2022 20:20

I know two Albas. I think it’s a lovely name.

Elieza · 05/02/2022 20:49

Alba in Gaelic is pronounced Alapa. Meaning Scotland. Hence BBC Alba etc.

So presumably if you want to keep the pronunciation the way it looks you can tell people it’s not Gaelic, it’s from one of the other origins. Grin
