Girls names in children's fiction

This is purely hypothetical as I don't have any child on the way (for the time being), but I've always fancied giving my (imaginary) daughter a middle name that is from a children's book. I loved reading as a child, and always thought it would nice to be able to share a name with a really good character. So thinking about it I've come up with:
Matilda and Sophie (Roald Dahl)
Lucy (Narnia)
Georgina (Famous Five)
Hermione (yes way too obvious!)
Charlotte (ok is a spider but still)
Heidi
Lila (couple of Philip Pullman books)

There must be plenty of others, any suggestions?

Amy (Little Women) very last minute choice of name for my dd having watched the film at 40 weeks!

pinkgirlythoughts · 27/06/2011 12:35

Just thinking of characters I liked as a child....

Alice (in Wonderland)
Susan (Narnia)
Darrell (Mallory Towers)

Zaft · 27/06/2011 12:37

Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy (Little Women)
Mary (The Secret Garden)
Katy (What Katy Did)

Susan, noooo! Way preferred Lucy as she wasn't all prim and proper (same with George over Ann in the Famous Five!). Darrell rocks though!

Arrietty from the Borrowers! As they all had 'borrowed' names that were a bit different from the originals I felt that this name was almost mine.....

SenoritaViva · 27/06/2011 12:49

Anne (of green gables) but not so keen on the name
Nancy or Peggy (Blackett from Swallows and Amazons the other two were Susan and Titty, neither of which I am so keen on!)

meditrina · 27/06/2011 12:49

Isn't it Lyra in the Pullman books? (Or am I thinking of diffent ones?)

Loveday Minette (The Little White Horse)
Josephine (The Chalet School Books)
Annabeth (The Percy Jackson books)
Alice (in Wonderland)
Clara (The Nutcracker)

hockeyforjockeys · 27/06/2011 12:56

meditrina - you're right about the Dark Materials (which is what I was getting confused with), but Lila is in Pullman's The Firework Maker's Daughter. Not sure about Loveday though!
Senorita - if they were twins could double up with Blyton and have Titty and Fanny!
Thought of another one - Carrie (as in Carrie's War)

Marianne / Marnie from "When Marnie was there"
Kizzie from "the Diddaquoi"
Sarah from " a little princess"

Laura (Ingalls Wilder)

pozzled · 27/06/2011 13:12

I love the name Lyra but DH wouldn't go for it. So we used Eve instead, sort of half-referring to His Dark Materials. And DD2 has Anne as a middle name- I'm a big Green Gables fan.

I adore the name Kizzy/Kezia, which was the Diddicoy. Always wanted a dd with that name, but DH said no way. I did go for another childhood heroine, though.

BikeRunSki · 27/06/2011 13:59

Maisy
Dora
Topsy
Fifi
Olivia

Joking aside, I am named after the heroine of my dad's favourite book. (Alice (in wonderland))

thumbwitch · 27/06/2011 14:12

Emily (from the New Moon)
Carlotta (from teh St. Clare's books)
Drina/Andrina (from the eponymous ballet books)
Jenna from a book I read about a mischling, second degree - but when I looked it up on Amazon it seems to have been written autobiographically by Ilse Koehn - don't know if her friend was called Jenna or she originally wrote it with the heroines as being Jenna - it's nearly 30y since I read it last.
Cecily (from the Woolpack)

Actually quite like the idea of using Mallory from Mallory Towers!

On the other hand, Alicia and Gwendolen for me are both ruled out by MT...

Didn't really read much growing up, I think I'm limited to the following boys' names:
Diggory (Narnia)
George (George Speaks)
Stanley (Flat Stanley!)

Janoschi · 27/06/2011 14:49

I loved Swallows and Amazons as a kid but would really balk at using Titty! But I would definitely consider Peggy, Nancy and Bridget.

Ramona was pretty spunky and I loved What Katy Did so I'll add Katy too.

oohlaalaa · 27/06/2011 15:26

As a child I was always going to call my daughter Lorna, as I thought Lorna Doone was the most beautiful name. I had a picture book called Lorna Doone.

pinkthechaffinch · 29/06/2011 11:45

Pssstoverhere

You can't name a girl baby Anna Maria after Samuel Whisker's flipping wife!!

That's just wrong!

Beth- Little Women
