A few weeks ago I was reading a thread about "baby names you love but would never use". I doubt it was intended to inspire but someone mentioned Somerby which immediately delighted me.

I already have Daniel and Roman and don't know yet if number 3 is a boy or girl.

Soooo, how bad is it? Would you think, "Hmmm, interesting, what a lovely name, how unusual." Or just that I was a twat for using it.

Other choiced are Noah and Peter at the minute.

Willoughby is a surname and Somerby is the name of a small village near where I live. Nooooooo to both!

Peter and Noah are great though :)

How about Peter Somerby or Peter Willoughby then?

I know a lovely 9 year old peter. it's a great name. not enid blyton. Quentin would be enid blyton!

vintageteacups · 20/06/2011 21:12

Is having an 'Enid Blyton' name a good or bad thing Hmm?

Bandwitch · 21/06/2011 23:12

Good if it's Peter, Richard or Julian. But bad if it's Fanny or Quentin.

OK, I agree that Fanny (or Richard/Dick) wouldn't be great, but what's wrong with Quentin? I know a lovely, cheeky 3 year old one. Also like Peter very much.

Less keen on Julian personally.

I know of two Richards (one is a Rich/ie), that is normal like Peter and I think that as two underused classics they will rise in popularity soon. Nick names go out of fashion. You don't really hear charles called chuck or Henry called Hank. Quentin is one of the few names I'd consider UNusuable. It's just so pompous-sounding. Pompous but also weak at the same time.

But it does have an air of privileged academia about it, which might be just the air some parents are deliberately trying to exude!!

I like it. I dont like Peter they are always mean in my experience (peters that is)
