With my due date fast approaching I'm worrying (no need I know) that I am no closer to having a name picked out. We don't know the sex which makes it harder to plan. I think we will end up taking a short list in with us and deciding once we meet baby. We're keeping our name ideas secret from everyone so haven't been able to test our names out. Can you help? What do you think? Do you know many and what ages are they? Surname is 2 syllables and starts with M.

Holly M
Ivy M
Imogen M

Finley M
Thomas M

Imogen and Thomas both lovely names.

Not keen on the rest but particularly dislike Ivy for some reason.

Finley quite a popular name ATM but if you like it go for it.

CointreauVersial · 14/06/2011 13:13

Isn't Finley normally spelled Finlay?

I prefer Ivy, Imogen and Finlay. Holly too childish, Thomas too boring.

manicinsomniac · 14/06/2011 13:28

Holly and Finley I think.

I also like Imogen and Thomas but dislike Ivy

virginiasmonalogue · 14/06/2011 13:29

Dislike Holly

Live Ivy

Love Imogen

&

Finley - ok

Thomas - ok

sophiesmummie · 14/06/2011 13:55

Holly M - dislike, too cutesy/chrismassy
Ivy M - nice
Imogen M - ok

Finley M - dull and very common
Thomas M - ok but also very common

If you'd like some inspiration, have a look at the ONS list showing ALL baby names used last year, there are some lovely less overused ones outside of the top 50 or 100.

tammytoby · 14/06/2011 13:59

I like Ivy and Imogen. The others are already very widely used, especially Tom and Finn, which I find a little dull.

stillstanding · 14/06/2011 14:03

All lovely. Probably my least favourite is Ivy. But your list is a good one and that your plan to decide when meeting the baby will work out perfectly. Good luck!

rachel1970 · 14/06/2011 14:17

Holly M - dislike
Ivy M - like very much
Imogen M - ok, sounds a little harsh

Finley M - too popular and dull
Thomas M - ok but also extremely popular

AliceAirhead · 14/06/2011 14:27

Imogen - gorgeous name. My son has 3 Hollys (Hollies?!) in his class; I always get put off a name when several children share it. Ivy just makes me think of that woman who used to be in Coronation Street... Tillsley?

Finley/Fin and Thomas/Tom both lovely names too, but they probably won't be the only ones in the class....

Our criteria for naming our DCs was having one they wouldn't have to share with anyone else and one their mates could shout across the pub when they were 18 without embarrassing them

Good luck!

atrixo · 14/06/2011 14:53

Imogen & Finley (but much prefer the Finlay spelling). Ivy is quite nice, as is Thomas. Not so keen on Holly.

FranSanDisco · 14/06/2011 14:56

I love Holly and Finley Smile. Don't like Ivy due to Tilsley women but others are OK.

flowerld · 15/06/2011 14:02

love Holly dislike Imogen and think ivy is a bit ugly sounding sorry.I like Thomas and Finley.

mopsyflopsy · 15/06/2011 14:23

I only like Ivy from your list. Imogen sounds unfeminine and Holly childish, and the boys names (Thomas and Finley) are too widely used already imo.

FriskyMare · 15/06/2011 14:28

Like Imogen, not keen on Holly or Ivy (too Christmas carolly) , Finlay seems to be THE fashionable name at the moment and whilst it is also popular I think Tom is a good solid never goes out of fashion name. (But then I'm biased!)

SloganLogan · 15/06/2011 22:29

I like Holly, Ivy and Thomas.

Not keen on Imogen or Finlay - both "fashion" names ATM.

topazmcgonagall · 17/06/2011 01:39

Like Imogen and Holly, in that order. Don't like Ivy. Like both Finlay and Thomas.

Anteater · 17/06/2011 01:47

Imogen is great, will go to Imy

Like Finton (Fin)

Bucharest · 17/06/2011 13:16

Ivy and Thomas.

Holly I don't dislike, but I imagine all Hollys to be teenagers. It's a bit dated now. Have never liked Imogen. Sounds hard.

Finlay is far too popular/faddy.

randomimposter · 17/06/2011 13:26

I like Imogen from your girl list.

Like Thomas, so classic, but a teeensy bit dull. Sorry.

Like Finn, Finley not so much. Would use Finnian as a longer name myself.

muminthemiddle · 17/06/2011 20:14

I like Imogen and Finlay best.

jellykittenaddict · 17/06/2011 20:48

Ivy & Tom

emmanumber3 · 17/06/2011 20:56

Tom & Holly or Tom & Ivy. I like Finley/Finn too and, although, lots of people on here seem to say it's very common I've never met one!

Imogen is horrible. Very hard & I really can't understand why it's getting so popular on here. The nn Imy makes my skin crawl Blush.
