Is a shortening to Millie inevitable?

I am wondering the same thing.
Mildred is on our list for dc5 (and is dh's favourite), and we are not sure whether to use Dilly from the start, to nip Millie in the bud straight away, or to just try and stick to Mildred (I love Mildred)
I can't really think of another nn for Millicent though.
I have never met either in rl.

Sylvaniasandwich · 24/05/2011 14:31

Mildred? Really?

SloganLogan · 24/05/2011 17:33

One baby Millicent, nicknamed Millie. Lovely name IMO. I do think Millie is the most natural name for Millicent, and a very pretty one. If popularityof Millie is the problem I think probably better to choose another name.

No Mildreds. I don't like the "dred" ending and it's a bit wet.

takeonboard · 24/05/2011 17:38

The only Mildred i have ever known was on the 70's TV series George and Mildred - she of the lava lamp! I have never met a Millicent. I wouldn't choose either, but I do like Millie.

DN is a Millie, with nickname Mildred.

EvilTwins · 24/05/2011 17:59

I teach a 13 yr old Millicent. Everyone calls her Millie.

WidowWadman · 24/05/2011 18:07

I loathe it when people shorten my Millicent's name to Millie. She is quite adamant that she;s a Millicent herself, too.

Geepers · 24/05/2011 18:13

I have an Amelia, known mostly as Millie, but I call her Mildred.

Pancakeflipper · 24/05/2011 18:16

I know 2 Millicents. One is always known as Millicent. The other is known as Milly.

shmoz · 24/05/2011 18:17

Both are brilliant names.

Mildred is my alter ego (& is a bit mad), Millicent is her older sister (& is a nutter). Millie is not allowed as a nn for either.

ensure · 24/05/2011 18:45

Pancakeflipper just wrote exactly what I was going to say. :)

smother · 24/05/2011 21:38

What about Dilys nn Dilly?

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 25/05/2011 08:39

My grandmother was Millicent, and always known as Mill, my grandad was Bill, so my dad grew up thinking all parents names rhymed. I would have used Melisande for a girl.

benne81 · 02/06/2011 14:19

I love Mildred but DH hates it so its off the list. It is probably a good thing because it would most likely get shortened to Milly which I hate as it is think bit to girly and wallflowery.
