How common is Holly at the moment?

Really like the name but trying to avoid any that are very very popular at the moment.

So how many do you know? (and do you like it?)

Holly is lovely. I know one and she's in her late 20's.

TabithaTwitchet · 10/05/2011 14:05

There were 3 in my ante-natal group! But all born at Christmas - I reckon it probably gets more popular then than in the rest of the year.

I quite like it.

ShowOfHands · 10/05/2011 14:08

It's used but not ridiculously so. But it does fall into that cutesty Tilly/Holly/Milly/Molly/Jolly/Jilly thing that everybody is mad about atm so it seems more popular than it is iyswim.

I have never met a Holly who doesn't have a sister called Poppy btw.

mustdash · 10/05/2011 14:11

I have a Holly (July born!) she's 8 and neither of her two sisters are called Poppy.

She is the only one in her current school, and the only one her her (large) previous school.

She is gorgeous, and funny, and smart.........just like every other Holly I've ever met. But I do accept some bias.

OneBadAsp · 10/05/2011 14:13

i only know one, 6 months old.

ShowOfHands · 10/05/2011 14:18

The Poppy thing wasn't a strict rule Grin.

I know 3 sibling sets named Holly and Poppy.

highlystrung · 10/05/2011 14:19

Three on my road!!

TeacupTempest · 10/05/2011 14:25

ok so mixed responses on popularity. Due date is 6th of December so quite festive I guess. Funny I never thought of it as being in the same group as Molly/Milly/Tilly etc......feels a bit different to me but not sure why!

It's the #1 name for girls born in December in 2009, I just checked the National Statistics England & Wales stats. It doesn't hit the top ten in any other month Grin

speakercorner · 10/05/2011 19:24

No Hollys in my DD's school or in DD2's nursery.

Emelene · 10/05/2011 21:00

I'm not sure how popular it is with little ones, but my name is Holly and I've always liked it. My sister is Grace, not Poppy, and I wasn't born at Christmas! Guess I buck the trend. Wink

I think it's different to Molly and Tilly. It's got a similar sound but is not so cutesy. It certainly won't sound odd when I'm old, I think it's nice at any age. :)

olddeuteronomy · 10/05/2011 21:16

Number 19 in popularity for england and wales 2009 with 2263 called it. Having said that not personally encountered any and know only one in scotland aged 2.

olddeuteronomy · 10/05/2011 21:19

also 775 Hollies!

DriverDan · 10/05/2011 21:20

I have an August born Holly, only one in her nursery and her sister is not Poppy!

I think it feels a bit different because the Milly/Tilly/Mollys all sound a bit nicknamey. I have known a couple of grown up ones as well whereas I haven't met a Milly/Tilly/Molly over the age of 5, so they seem more 'cutesy' iyswim.

MercurySoccer · 10/05/2011 21:55

I know one Holly. Very pretty name :)

purplearmadillo · 10/05/2011 22:00

Its one of the more popular names amongst people I know. There are 2 in DD"s small village school (only one of two girls names that are repeated). Two colleagues in my team in the last 18 months had DDs named Holly (Feb and Nov birthdays) and I know 2 others under 6.

I do think its nice though.

pipparoo · 10/05/2011 22:13

I know two - one is late twenties and the other was born last Christmas. I like it and agree it's not quite as cutesy as the other names mentioned as it's more of a classic

puddle2 · 11/05/2011 10:17

Its on my girl name list too so I love it! My other girl name is Imogen, so also quite popular. I'm not sure I would use it for a girl born in December though - but mines a summer sprog so may go for it.
Its lovely - you could pick a rare name and still end up with 2 in the same friendship group/class at school.

munstersmum · 11/05/2011 10:20

Know 2 Hollys. 1 age 5 & 1 age 10.
1 Imogen in DS's class.

TeacupTempest · 11/05/2011 11:12

Thank you for all the replies. Holly is now officially on "the list!"
