Opinions on girl's name shortlist please

Both DS and DD have names that are not particularly common but not too unusual (DS name squeaking into top 100, DDs name not there but mentioned a fair bit on here I've noticed). If next DC is a boy, his name will most likely be Jude as this would have been DDs name, if she had popped out with a set of tackle 7 years ago, and we still love it.

Having a harder time with girl names however and would appreciate some opinions/suggestions to mess up improve shortlist so far.

Nancy - DHs late grandmother, has grown on us a lot, might keep for middle if don't choose for first.

Esme - can you get away with 'Esmee' prn as that's how I've always said it in my head? Prefer that to 'Esmay' but don't want to look like a plonker if it's blatently wrong!

Emilia/Emmy - DH's favourite

Kitty - my current front runner I think, usually would rather give full name on BC but MIL's name and DD1 middle name are Catherine already.

Edith/Edie - also love but DH not as keen mainly because of Edith Bowman Hmm

Already considered but ruled out for various reasons
Romilly, Marnie, Agatha, Florence, Maude, Willa and Bea (and about a million others...)

All opinions tolerated gratefully received. Do your worst!

If you love Jude, why not use it for a girl? It doesn't need to just be a nn or short for Judith. I know two Jude girls and one Jude boy (in their 30's).
We've got Esme on our (very) short list, and I pronounce it Esmee, but I'm very northern and that's just how it comes out, I sound pretentious if I say it the proper way!
Emilia is lovely too.

GooGooMuck · 08/05/2011 11:35

I like Emilia.

As an aside, I don't like Edith Bowman either. She looks like a 5 year old dressed her. All the time. Grin

virginiasmonalogue · 08/05/2011 11:36

i do like your names!

kitty is adoreable as is Nancy.

The only one I'm not keen on is Esme

BornAgainBitch · 08/05/2011 11:41

I love, love, love Nancy!

iph · 08/05/2011 11:42

Thanks Jenni.

Good to know I'm not alone with Esmee and we live in the north too. What else is on your very short, short list if you don't mind me asking?

Can't get excited about Jude for a girl. Just has a different feel to it to me than Jude for a boy, don't know why.

Definately Nancy.

squeak2392 · 08/05/2011 11:50

Nancy - Love, love, love!!
Esme - I personally would say Esmay, but I know a lot of people say Esmee. Not keen on it, tbh.
Emilia/Emmy - Depends. I like it, but if it sounds like Amelia in your accent, then no. Love the nn Emmy though.
Kitty - Cute, but wouldn't use as a full name. Doesn't have to be Catherine - Tabitha, Felicity (I like, but everyone's saying there's no connection :(), Katrina.
Edith/Edie - Love! Don't know who Edith Bowman is...

Definitely Nancy or Edith :)

JenniL1977 · 08/05/2011 11:50

iph we have Juliette, Miriam (DH's awesome mum who died when he was 18 was Miraid shortened to Mimi, we thought Miriam would shorten to that without giving DD the hassle of having to spell her name all the time, if that makes sense!)
See, I said it was a short list!
Emilia Nancy would be a lovely name - cute for a little girl, but grown up for when she becomes a doctor :)

iph · 08/05/2011 12:07

Owww, nothing like starting your first baby name thread to make you realise you are fickle indecisive!
I find myself agreeing with all of you in turn Confused Smile

Tummy - I definitely pronounce the 'Em' of Emilia but that's one of my concerns that people would say/hear Amelia. Amelia is lovely in itself but very popular at the mo.

Jenni - all nice choices, Miriam is gorgeous and especially lovely as a tribute to your DH's mum.

Fab list!

Love Nancy, Kitty and EmiliaSmile

Esme (Esmay) is lovely, but is fast becoming very popular.

I'm concerned that Esme is getting a bit popular too, I think that's why I'm going off it. iph I think I'd be more likely to pronounce Emilia as more like Imm-Elia, maybe it wouldn't get mixed up with the A sound if you're ooop north.
I'm totally considering Nancy now tho :)

MercurySoccer · 08/05/2011 15:44

Nancy - not keen
Esme - don't like, sound harsh
Emilia/Emmy - lovely :)
Kitty - a cat's nickname, don't like
Edith/Edie - like :)

pointydog · 08/05/2011 15:52

Nancy - it's ok but various connotations put me off

Esme can be spelled Esmee as well as pronounced that way. I quite like it, especially since I know a fantastic one.

Emilia/Emmy - nice sound. Is it forrin?

Kitty - I love this. Wanted it for one of mine but couldn't due to family reasons.

Edith/Edie - has really grown on me to the extent I now prefer Edith to Edie.

Maybeitsbecause · 08/05/2011 17:19

I really like Nancy.

Not keen on the others.

Emily and Emmeline are both much nicer than Emilia, imo, which is just going to get mistaken for Amelia constantly.

suspiria · 08/05/2011 17:30

I love Kitty, beautiful name.

cazzybabs · 08/05/2011 17:33

I love Kitty and Nancy .. and I like Judith (Jude). I think on reflection i love Kitty the most

iph · 09/05/2011 15:11

Yay for the love of Nancy!

Nancy and Kitty emerging as frontrunners, Emilia and Edith bringing up the rear, Esme consigned to the subs bench (may have mixed my sporting metaphors there).

Thanks all for your thoughts Smile

I love Esme - and pronounce it Esmee too.

Emilia is so pretty.

Nancy is quite sweet.

Kitty is great - but she would have to be Katherine or maybe Kathleen to distinguish from your DD1.

Edith doesn't do it for me.

pinkgirlythoughts · 09/05/2011 19:26

I love all of your names- probably Edith and Kitty would be my favourites, if I had to choose!

Can I ask what your DS and DD are called?
