Baby name debate - DH is not on the same wavelength!!

Hi All...

So Although it is ridiculously early - DH and I have had a chat about names.

If 'Emmy the Embryo' is a girl : Emily Catherine

If a boy: I would like Tobias Henry (Toby for short)...
DH seems to think Toby is a dog's name... thoughts??

I like classical English boys names - but not 'old man' names...
ie. Henry/Andrew = good Eric/Alfred = not my thing

Any help would be appreciated...

Emily Catherine is a lovely name :)

Tobias Henry is fine too, although I'd swap it round to Henry Tobias.

Maybeitsbecause · 07/05/2011 12:53

Emily Catherine is lovely.

I agree with your DH, though, sorry. Toby is twee and makes me think 'Golden Retriever'. Tobias is poncy. Henry much nicer.

meditrina · 07/05/2011 12:58

Toby is the dog in Punch and Judy, but it's not an association I'd make automatically.

How about: Edward, Charles, Peter, James, Rupert, Michael, Luke, Matthew, Jonathan, Theodore, Frederick, Robert, Phillip, William, Gregory?

FebreezeYourJeans · 07/05/2011 13:04

Emily Catherine is pretty but there are a hell of a lot of Emilys out there, we know 11 between the ages of 4 months and 19 yrs. That may not bother you though.

Toby is OK, I like the song (Tyre swing?) which has the line 'and I've never met a Toby that I didn't like'

MummytobeLizz · 07/05/2011 13:17

Am not too bothered by the number of Emily's out there... I am an Elizabeth and DH is a Robert...

meditrina :
Edward = nasty ex of mine
James = my brother
Rupert = ex family dog
Michael = my Dad's name
Matthew = dh of a friend (incidently can't stand him!!)
Jonathan = don't like abbreviations
Fredrick = I know three dogs called Fred!
Robert = DH's name
Philip = never liked
William = not a fan of abbreviations
Gregory = not a fan...

Charles, Luke and Theodore are all ok...
You know when a name just doesn't 'feel' right - strange huh!

Mercurysoccer - Henry Tobias is nice too... maybe DH will prefer this way round...

I like Tobias Henry!

How about Patrick? Not exactly English, but well known enough not to be thought odd for an English baby.

MEBMotherof3 · 07/05/2011 18:07

We have a 2 year old Toby and loads of people say how nice a name it is plus Ive hardly met any others. Personally I dont like Tobias as much, hence why we just called him Toby, but that's a personal thing. Think Toby Flood the rugby player rather than dog's name!

Love Emily but then Im biased as that's my name! (Incidentally I havent met that many, but that could just be where we live!)

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 07/05/2011 20:49

Like Tobias but not Henry - prefer Tobias Andrew.

Emily Catherine is v nice.

WickedWitchSouthWest · 07/05/2011 20:53

Emily Catherine is very nice.

I'm not keen on Henry personally. Have you thought about looking back through your family tree and seeing what names you unearth that way? This was greast for us choosing a boys name but rubbish for the girls names! (Gladys, Fanny, Mavis....)

pilates · 07/05/2011 21:09

Emily Catherine is lovely

and prefer Henry Tobias

FoxyRevenger · 07/05/2011 21:34

Erm, is it just in Scotland that Toby is another name for a willy?

ChippingIn · 07/05/2011 21:40

It must be Foxy! Shock

Emily Catherine is pretty.

I like Toby (but not Tobias) I also wouldn't go with Toby Henry...
