I like them. I prefer Martha, but Matilda is good and the shortened forms are good too

RancerDoo · 06/05/2011 22:27

Prefer Martha too. If it went with my surname I'd have used it for DD2.

robincousins · 06/05/2011 22:28

i like them because they are not overly feminine but yet girly at the same time . hey feel quite robust .

sorry i don't really like either of them

love Marta, but that's not much help is it

Bluebell99 · 06/05/2011 22:38

I really don't like Martha, think it's an ugly name like Bertha, Maid's names, sorry but you did ask. I always think would I as an adult like to be called "...." and the answer for Martha is NO. Maltida is a bit better.

MercurySoccer · 06/05/2011 22:56

Martha is OK, prefer other M names though (Miriam, Mary, Miranda).

Dislike Matilda/Tilly, it's too prim and faddy.

MelinaM · 06/05/2011 22:59

Martha is absolutely lovely, not as common as Matilda, and no nasty nn's like Tillie or Matti!!!

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 06/05/2011 23:03

I have a Mathilda and it does irk me that people see it as 'faddy'. It's been in our family for years and years. I always said as a child I'd use it and back then it was rare to hear it. It is actually going back down the charts now after a surge a couple of years ago.

DD is a Tilda though, never Tilly, sometimes Mathilda.

Martha's pretty.

MollyMurphy · 06/05/2011 23:13

I dislike Martha personally but think Matilda is adorable if a bit popular.

smother · 06/05/2011 23:49

I prefer martha by quite some way. I don't think it's an 'ugly' name. And Matilda is a little bit tooooo pretty for my taste, esp the nn Tilly. Love Tilda as a nn though.

pilates · 07/05/2011 21:21

Martha ok but Matilda is softer and prettier

LynetteScavo · 07/05/2011 21:26

I love Martha.

Matilda is nice, but popular atm. Depends if you mind there being another one at school.

manicinsomniac · 08/05/2011 20:43

I quite like Matilda.

Martha just makes me think of old ladies though.

Love them both.

COCKadoodledooo · 08/05/2011 21:07

Love Martha - it's what ds2 would have been had he been a girl Grin

EffieB · 08/05/2011 21:47

Think Martha and Matilda are both lovely, both were on my list but oooo I think Meredith is nicer- same ballpark but less common and very very nice indeed (IMO)

RobynLou · 08/05/2011 21:50

I have a Martha who's almost 4 and I love her name!

was almost put off by martha being the patron saint of housewifes though...

speakercorner · 09/05/2011 08:59

DH loves Martha, hates Matilda. I loved Matilda for a while but hated Martha with our surname (which is kind of solid, like Martha).

Matilda/Tilly is prettier, Martha is cooler so long as the child doesn't have sturdy genes.

FIFIBEBE · 09/05/2011 09:04

Bingo - I have both, so I think a fantastic choice. Now 12 and 15 and names seem to have suited them throughout their childhood and still seem appropriate. Martha is always Martha and Matilda is sometimes Tilly to her friends, but not at home.
