I know it sounds like a car company but...

I really like the girls name Kiya - we heard it on a documentary about Tutankhamun recently and both my husband and I like it, we have tried it out on a few people, some people really like it, we had a few screwed up faces and 'hmmm's, but nearly everone mentions Kia Ceed the car. Is it ok, car company and all, or should I just forget about it and go back to the drawing board?

Thanks!

Drawing board.

Don't like it, sorry. What about Keira, Kira, or Mia?

rachel1970 · 05/05/2011 13:40

It sounds nice but I'd add an 'r' to Kira - that would work better imo.

fishandlilacs · 05/05/2011 14:14

Is it pronounced Kia (kee-yah) though I read it as Ky-yah, which sounds better.

meditrina · 05/05/2011 14:19

It's difficult to know how long or how strongly a brand association will last. My first reaction to Kiya, from the sound of it, would be Kia Ora orange juice.

That said, I do think it's workable as a name and the car wouldn't occur to me.

pilates · 05/05/2011 14:20

I prefer Kira

wheniwishuponastar · 05/05/2011 14:20

i like it. go for it. its hard to find original names that are actually nice.

OptomisticBiscuit · 05/05/2011 14:34

Thanks for the honest feedback. I did also think of Kia Ora - but those ads haven't run for years so hopefully she wouldn't be teased for that. Keira / Kira are lovely names, but a Keira had an affair with my first serious partner of four years, it was a long time ago but I couldn't even conteplate it! It is pronounced 'kia' same as the car...

What about pronouncing it as "Ki-ya" rather than "Key-a" IYSWIM? I know of a Kiya pronounced "Ki-ya" & it really suits her.

CandiceMariePratt · 05/05/2011 15:33

I know a Kiah

meditrina · 05/05/2011 18:23

Is that model car likely to be around much longer?

I doubt that people think of the car anymore on meeting someone called Marina.

Cattleprod · 05/05/2011 18:27

I know a little girl called Kia. Named after the car. I like it, it's not an obvious car name like Mercedes. You could use Sia if the car thing puts you off.

cece · 05/05/2011 18:33

I know a girl called Kyah

WiiUnfit · 05/05/2011 19:40

Unfortunately, Kia is the car company not the model so chances are they'll be around a good while!

Emelene · 05/05/2011 19:43

I did think of the car Kia and Keys when I heard it to be honest. Keira is nice, or Mia / Maya for a similar sound?

There's also the boy's name Keir pronounced "Key-a" too.

MercurySoccer · 05/05/2011 21:14

How about Gia, short for Gianna? Tia, Pia, Kiana or Kianna?

kiwidreamer · 05/05/2011 22:09

The Kiya I know pronounces it Ky-ah, it's a name I've heard a few times back in NZ where they tend to be more... liberal with names than here in the UK and it's always pn'd as above, couldn't tell you why, maybe just a generally accepted thing rather than correct pronunciation.

meditrina · 05/05/2011 22:31

I wouldn't recommend Pia in an English speaking country, as it's too easily too lavatorial. Nor Sia, as that's the name of the qualification bouncers and security guards have to have (though that's not so obvious, and possibly not so durable a connotation).

hilltop666 · 05/05/2011 22:33

Wat about Kaia - pn kai-a ????

BikeRunSki · 05/05/2011 22:34

Well. wasn't Mercedes Benz named after a real person?

I can see Kia cars being around a while, as they have only recently broken into the main-ish stream European market place. However, I went to school with a Cleo, and no one every mentioned the small French hatchback.

emmanumber3 · 05/05/2011 22:35

It does make me think of the car company but I still like it Smile. I did hear of a baby girl a year or two ago who was named Kia Carens because she was born on the back seat of one! You weren't thinking of Ceed as the middle name were you? Grin.

DrMuffy · 05/05/2011 22:45

My DD is Kaia - pronounced like ky-yah.

i was going to suggest kaia, i did assume it was pronounced like that until i read the thread, ky-ah is much nicer than kee-ya imo

GwendolineMaryLacey · 06/05/2011 11:31

It's not my sort of name but it's not horrible and I really think the car is a bit of a red herring. I don't think of the car when I hear it, I just think of the Mia, Tia sort of names.

If you like it, use it. Apart from which, nearly every flippin' girls name has been used by a car company. I know a couple of little Cleos and no one mentions the car to them.
