Lux, Huxley and others ending in X

Ok these are my favourite names....
Lux for a girl (heard it in the Virgin Suicides film - yes, I know not a good reference. But also its Latin for light, and my name means light in another language. I also like Tripp, as in Tripp Fontaine, from the Virgin Suicides. But even I realise this isn't a good one.)
Hux or Huxley for a boy
Obviously I couldn't use both.

My husband doesn't like either. The furthest he will go with "X" thing is Max. Which is quite nice. If a little boring.

My grandfather's name was Basil, which is quite cute. But will probably end up as Baz.

I also really like Van (as in Van Hansis - very beautiful American actor - his full name is Evan).

I also like American names in general: Parker, Madison, Cody.

I realise I am probably coming off as having really horrible taste. But thought I'd better get some feedback to either put me off, or at least air the names.

Oh yes, I really like Dexter. My dad used to teach a boy called Dexy. And I love Dexter Fletcher. What a great combination i must say.

Alex is a bit unisex for me, but i appreciate the suggestion.

Maddox - perfect combination of American and ending in X! But gives me a funny feeling somehow.

oh and xavier doesn't end in x but lovely imo

wheniwishuponastar · 03/05/2011 22:17

I quite like Felix. The whole cartoon cat thing is cute.
Lex makes me think of Letch. So that's out.
I'm not keen on Z or Q - but appreciate the idea of branching out into the "unusual letters" thing. Good idea!

Rex - that's King isn't it, in Latin. Might be asking a bit much.
Dexter is a winner though. That's definitely going on the list.

My shortlist is:
Lux
Huxley
Dexter
Cody
Van

Now I just have to convince my husband to embrace the pretentious. He's all Jack and Amy at the moment. Anyone had any luck with that?

Freesias you make me laugh. I actually do like Fax - if only it weren't a communication device. What is Dax? that reminds me of something. Teutorix makes me think of Asterix. Yes, more cartoon associations which i like. Jax could be a different take on Jack. Phoenix could be alright.

Felix is going on the shortlist.

My shortlist is:
Lux
Huxley
Dexter
Cody
Van
Felix

Are you Angelina Jolie? All her boys have names ending in x - Maddox, pax and Knox. I read she is planning another adoption.

eurycantha · 03/05/2011 22:24

I think dexter,Max and Felix are the best I`m sorry but to me Lux is soap and Huxley was Huxley pig.

Sidge · 03/05/2011 22:24

Lux makes me think of soap.

Van is a bit weird as a single name on it's own; it's more commonly used as an adjunct for surnames isn't it?

How about Rex, Dexter, Kendrix, Phoenix, Lennox, Roxanne, Xander, Axel, Braxton, Flaxen?

Truffkin · 03/05/2011 22:25

How about names starting in X? I like Xenophin (nn. Xen) pron. Zen-o-fin (nn. Zen) Also like Dexter and know a very cute little Felix Grin

wheniwishuponastar · 03/05/2011 22:26

oh yeah so she does. well she better not pinch my names!!!! sadly no i am not her. i do quite like Pax. im guessing its Latin for Peace?

OP posts:
wheniwishuponastar · 03/05/2011 22:33

Yes I know Van is a bit of a strange one. I think it only sounds good with his surname: Hansis. His full name is actually: Evan Vanfossen Hansis. (I recommend checking him out in general anyway!!)

The soap thing does not put me off Lux I'm afraid. Though i have a friend called Flora whose life is blighted by the margarine, so its good to consider in advance.

Would Hux be better than Huxley then, to shift the pig associations.

Flaxen is nice. If it didn't mean blonde (i think).

My shortlist is:
Lux
Huxley
Dexter
Cody
Van
Felix
Pax

I know a baby Hendrix. Do you like that? I think it's nice as is Felix. When I was having my daughter there was another lady who named her baby boy Maddox. I really like the name but did immediately think of Angelina Jolie.

Dreya · 04/05/2011 00:00

BTW wheniwishuponastar Dax is a mens hair wax/product. Is that what you were thinking of?!

wheniwishuponastar · 04/05/2011 00:09

Oh yes, I was thinking of men's hair wax! Dax. ha.

Hendrix - its growing on me. But a lot to live up to!!! But I do like surnames as first names (hence Huxley).

thanks for the suggestions...

Dare I pipe up with the girl's name I was forcibly banned from using by everyone I know? Phlox. I think it's gorgeous.... sigh.

wheniwishuponastar · 04/05/2011 00:28

phlox - how do you pronounce that? like Flox?

Atomant · 04/05/2011 02:07

Lux = unit of illuminance in my professional world (I'm in the world of design & talk about lux levels on an every day basis, even although I'm not a lighting designer) & can imagine someone in this world continually having to say 'yes that is my real name'.

Also reminds me of Lux Interior from The Cramps, but that's me just showing my age & musical taste.

Whilst Pax & Maddox are nice names, there will always be the Joliet-Pitt connection if that bothers you.

Just food for thought....

CheerfulYank · 04/05/2011 02:24

Axel is nice, and a "proper name" :)

I like Baxter, too.

From your list I think Dexter and Phoenix are nice. I do like Maddox but don't like Angelina, so there you are. :)

I do like Van but short for Donovan or Sullivan.

Hmm...more X names. The dad of a girl I grew up with was called Dixon, but there's the whole "dicks" thing to contend with.

Rindercella · 04/05/2011 02:40

Fox, as a nod towards your grandfather Grin

Xanthe for a girl. Ahh, just seen it means blonde hairs so may not work for you. Funny as the Xanthe I know has dark hair.

Rindercella · 04/05/2011 02:41

Phoenix is lovely.
